The Stationary Engineer 2 position is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of one or more high pressure boilers at Western Washington Universitys Steam Plant. This includes multi-fuel firing. Depending on the day or night shift the position requires independent Steam Plant operations. The Steam Plant is an essential campus facility required for building heating and domestic hot water heating of the 3.5 million square foot WWU main campus. Operations are required around the clock 365 days of the year. The successful candidate must be available 24 hours per day for emergency response.

Ensure continuous and uninterrupted steam is supplied to campus

- Make decisions about service level and ready standby equipment as needed.

- Execute sound judgment in other decision making situations.

- Independently complete maintenance and repairs of boilers machinery controls etc.

- Know the location of electrical circuit breakers for all equipment located in steam plant.

- Observe and practice safety in all endeavors.

- Follow general instructions/direction from supervisor.

- Other related duties as assigned.

- Comply with the applicable Washington Administrative Code (WAC) regulations.

- Comply with the Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA) Occupational Safety and Health Agency (OSHA) rules and regulations and standard job safety rules.

Make timely rounds through the Steam Plant

- Make inspection rounds of the steam plant BEFORE taking responsibility for the Plant and the new shift at the beginning of each shift.

- The shift Stationary Engineer is responsible for making proper rounds in the steam plant a minimum of one per hour with the first round prior to relieving the shift being the most important.

- For smooth continuous operations timeliness relieving the prior shift and conscientious attention to detail is imperative.

- Diagnose operating problems and implement corrective measures.

Coordinate response to campus emergency alarms after hours

-Monitor emergency alarms received from various campus locations and University Police/Public Safety.

- Communicate response needs to appropriate Facilities Management supervisor on the afterhours call out lists.

Water Testing and Treatment

- Perform chemical testing and treatment of all boiler water return condensate and raw make-up water.

- Maintain accurate records of the testing and treatment.

Communication

- Provide written communication of events and particulars concerning plant operations occurring on daily shift to include after-hour notifications and campus wide service responses to staff and other campus constituents.

- Provide accurate and clear verbal communication to relief shift.

- Work effectively with employees at all levels of the university organization.

Reports and Other

- Monitor boiler room log and take shift readings.

- Prepare required steam plant reports.

Required Qualifications
  • Two years of experience in the operation maintenance and/or repair of stationary or marine high pressure boilers and heating systems.
    OR
  • Certificate of completion of an advanced Stationary Engineer course from an accredited vocational/technical school or community college plus one years of experience in the operation maintenance and/or repair of stationary or marine high pressure boilers and heating systems.
    OR
  • One year of State service as a Stationary Engineer 2.
  • Familiar with combustion controls including electronic and pneumatic controls and their hand/auto applications.
  • Solid understanding of the main steam and water cycle in a steam plant including the function of key system components.
  • Exceptional work ethic.
  • Ability to work independently in a safe thorough manner with close attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage time well and perform work under pressure situations and meet deadlines.
  • Possess troubleshooting skills.
  • Utilize strong interpersonal skills in written and oral communication.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer applications to prepare documents for after-hour notifications and campus-wide service responses.
  • Valid drivers license or the ability to obtain one prior to starting work to drive state-owned vehicles to work locations.
  • Physically perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Holds a State Stationary Engineer s or Marine Engineers Steam Operators license and related experience.
  • Additional years of experience working in steam plant operations.
  • Demonstrated experience in the operation maintenance and/or repair of centralized air compressor systems for multiple facilities.
  • Demonstrated experience in the operation maintenance and/or repair of steam turbine boiler feed water pumps.
  • Demonstrated experience monitoring emergency alarm and connecting personnel for response efforts.
  • Demonstrated experience switching between various fuel sources for higher pressure boilers.
