DESCRIPTION

The Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) is responsible for the maintenance repair and outfitting of police vehicles to ensure operational readiness and officer safety. This position plays a critical role in supporting law enforcement operations by maintaining marked patrol units unmarked vehicles and other specialized police fleet assets.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid Drivers License at time of placement; CDL preferred.
  • Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification preferred or must obtain within 12 months of hire.
  • ASE certifications in relevant areas (brakes electrical/electronic systems engine performance etc.) strongly preferred.
  • Upfitter or installer certifications (e.g. Whelen Havis or Setina) a plus.
  • Technical training in automotive electrical or emergency vehicle systems preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of automotive repair experience with at least 1 year working on law enforcement or other emergency vehicles preferred.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours including evenings weekends or on-call status for emergency repairs.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge and strong understanding of vehicle electrical systems and police vehicle equipment.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with safety standards and law enforcement operational requirements.
  • Skills in excellent diagnostic and problem-solving abilities.
  • Skills in strong organization and written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive law enforcement equipment appropriately.
  • Ability to install and troubleshoot complex wiring data and communications systems.
  • Ability to work in an environment with automotive chemicals noise and moving equipment.

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Perform routine and emergency maintenance on police vehicles including sedans SUVs and specialty units.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical electrical and electronic systems including lighting sirens radios in-vehicle computers (MDTs) ALPR systems radar units and vehicle-mounted cameras.
  • Install configure and troubleshoot law enforcement-specific equipment such as push bumpers partitions gun racks vehicle modems and data systems.
  • Ensure that vehicles comply with department standards local regulations and public safety requirements.
  • Conduct inspections of fleet vehicles for performance and safety before deployment.
  • Maintain accurate service records in accordance with department and regulatory standards.
  • Coordinate with officers and supervisors to address vehicle issues and prioritize urgent repairs.
  • Assist with upfitting and decommissioning of vehicles during fleet replacement cycles.
  • Monitor parts inventory order supplies and ensure proper storage of tools and materials.
  • Respond to emergency repair needs during critical incidents or vehicle breakdowns in the field. This work is typically performed in a fleet maintenance garage but may involve outdoor work and occasional field service.

This position is an essential service position and will require providing services during emergency situations.
