The Environmental Program Consultant will function as the new North Carolina Wastewater Monitoring Network (NCWMN) Center of Excellence (COE) Coordinator. NCWMN operates with approximately $2M in annual funding from the CDC National Wastewater Surveillance System (NWSS) through the Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity Cooperative Agreement. The COE is a collaboration between NCDHHS UNC Chapel Hill and the Orange Water and Sewer Authority to provide cutting edge wastewater surveillance guidance to NWSS and other states and jurisdictions with a focus on the southeastern US.

The COE Coordinator duties include managing daily activities for the COE assisting with the management of grant deliverables and reporting collaborating with NC academic public health and utility partners as well as other COEs coordinating trainings provided to other states and jurisdictions assisting with dashboard design and web development and leading project activities as needed. The COE will help to provide subject matter expertise in wastewater-based epidemiology public health surveillance and project management and may contribute to presentations and publications with the NCWMN team or collaborators. This position will supervise permanent and temporary staff including a Public Health Educator supporting COE activities. The COE Coordinator reports to the NCWMN Program Director.

About the Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology Branch:
The Occupational and Environmental Epidemiology Branch investigates workplace and environmental conditions that may pose a risk to human health. Our expertise includes epidemiology toxicology industrial hygiene and health communications. We identify and quantify environmental concerns for public health surveillance provide medical consultations for exposures of concern at work or in communities conduct risk assessments and provide scientifically based guidance on acceptable levels of exposure to environmental contaminants.

Qualified applicants must possess and application must clearly reflect work experience that demonstrates the following:

Management Preferences:
  • Experienced in wastewater-based epidemiology or wastewater surveillance.
  • Experienced in program or grant management.
  • Experienced in developing and implementing trainings.
  • Experienced in using statistical software or statistical programming languages such as SAS or R.
  • Working knowledge of microbiology virology or wastewater surveillance.
  • Working knowledge of database design and data management.
  • Experienced in supervising and mentoring staff.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Qualified applicants must possess and application must clearly reflect work experience that demonstrates the following:

Masters degree in one of the agricultural biological engineering environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of experience related to the area of assignment
OR
An equivalent combination of education and experience.
