Job Summary:

West Texas A&M University a member of The Texas A&M University System invites applications for the position of Assistant/Associate Professor of Agriculture Forage Scientist. This is an 11-month tenure track position that reports to the Head of the Department of Agricultural Sciences. WTAMU is seeking an innovative and dynamic educator and scientist to build a nationally recognized teaching and research program in forage science/management that complements existing programs in dryland agriculture range science and soil/environmental science. WTAMU is a four-year academic institution with more than 9000 students serving the Texas Panhandle and beyond. The geographic region is noted for its integrated crop-livestock agriculture and related agri-business. The Department of Agricultural Sciences has over 1100 students and offers B.S. M.S . and Ph.D. degrees.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in area of expertise using face-to-face and/or online formats.
  • Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students
  • Active participation in departmental university scientific community and industry service activities
  • Develop strong crop forage and livestock industry relationships in the region/state
  • Build a dynamic research program that will attract extramural and contract funding with targeted areas of research that may include integrated dryland forage/livestock systems forage breeding plant physiology management soil health grazing management nutrition water management use of technology or related disciplines.
  • Work collaboratively with WTAMU faculty other agencies and universities and constituents in the forage crop and livestock industry to support regional teaching research and service needs.

Necessary Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Agronomy Plant/Soil Science or closely related field with an emphasis in forage use in integrated systems
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching research and service
  • Working knowledge and experience in forage science agronomy and production
  • Academic or industry experience beyond the Ph.D. is preferred
  • Commitment to an interdisciplinary team approach to education and research
  • Desire and ability to establish working relationships with external constituents in the forage and livestock industry
  • Leadership skills effective interpersonal communication self-motivation and the ability to thrive in a student-centered environment are essential qualities expected
