This position reports to the Associate Warden of Custody and serves as the Officer-in-Charge who is responsible for the daily operations of a minimum custody correctional facility ensuring security is maintained according to NCDAC policy and procedures. Job responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to the following:
Providing direct supervision of the assigned Sergeant I on duty.
Conducting shift line-up making shift assignments inspecting all personnel to determine if they are physically and mentally capable of assuming their assigned post.
Conducting daily inspections of housing units building and grounds to identify safety hazards. Inspecting posts to ascertain that the officers are alert that discipline is being maintained and that assignments are carried out properly to ensure the operation is running smoothly.
Conducting and reviewing investigations regarding security issues incidents disputes and complaints.
Conducting searches of staff visitors and offenders for contraband.
Responding to emergency situations as needed.
Assisting in planning and supervising personnel actions time reports staff evaluations officer work schedules and training.
Assisting in the coordination and planning of activities involving discipline security and the welfare of the offender population.
Preparing a variety of records and reports related to custody operations.
Performing other duties as needed.
As of January 1 2025 there are new increase adjustments to the state pay plan which were approved by the State Human Resources Commission effective January 1 2025. The new salary range will be $37782 - $66120.
Note to Current State Employees:
The salary grade for this position is NC08(Salary Range: $37782 - $66120). State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as or lower than their current position. If selected for this position a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience funding availability and internal equity. Based upon these factors a pay increase MAY result.
About Wake Correctional Center:
Wake Correctional Center in Raleigh is a minimum-security prison for adult males. It is primarily a work unit in that 80 percent of the offenders leave the facility each day for incentive wage work assignments in various state agencies in the Wake County area. Offenders also work at other area adult correctional-facilities and Correction Enterprises operations. There are also offenders nearing their release date that participate on the work release program leaving the facility to work for businesses in the community. Incentive wage work assignments are also available at the prison in the food service clothes house janitorial landscaping maintenance canteen and recreation areas.
Wake Technical Community College works with the prison to provide full-time vocational classes in Certified Communications Heating/Air Conditioning and Electrical Wiring. Part-time classes in Blueprint Reading and Horticulture are also available. Educational classes in GED college-level courses and college correspondence classes are available.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diplomaANDtwo years of experience as a Correctional Sergeant; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualifications: Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
