Job Description

Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in North America serving Cook DuPage Will Lake Kane and McHenry Counties. The agency is linking communities in Northeastern Illinois by providing safe reliable and efficient commuter service.

Engineering is responsible for building and maintaining the majority of Metras fixed assets such as buildings stations bridges track electrical telecommunications and signal systems. The Engineering Department also monitors the condition of and assists in building and maintaining the fixed assets on the freight lines where Metra trains operate. The Engineering Department is divided into two major groups: Capital Projects and Communications and Maintenance.

Reporting to the Director Signal Engineering under immediate supervision performs entry-level professional engineering duties in the design and analysis of signaling and crossing systems installations.

The Primary Duties include: Create basic systems designs including technical drawings calculations parts lists and cost estimates in accordance with standard operating procedures quality measures and codes and regulations. Assist in investigating systems and equipment malfunctions identifying the root cause of problems and developing solutions to resolve failures and performance issues. Collaborate with field personnel on routing circuit designs and make modifications as needed during installation. Research manufacturer parts and materials and conduct technical evaluations to determine if products meet Metras quality standards and are compatible with existing equipment. Perform other related duties as needed to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.

Metra is a railroad employer subject to the provisions of the Railroad Retirement Tax Act not the Social Security Administration.

  1. Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering Electronics Technology or a related discipline.
  2. Working knowledge of electrical engineering design and construction principles methods and techniques.
  3. Working knowledge of materials techniques and components of electrical engineering.
  4. Working knowledge of software applications as they relate to engineering discipline.
  5. Good analytical organizational and critical thinking skills.
  6. Good research attention to detail and problem solving skills.
  7. Good verbal and written communication skills.
  8. Basic skill using Cad systems to create designs and drawings.
  9. Basic skill using engineering applications.
  10. Ability to apply engineering knowledge to routine electrical engineering problems with versatility judgment and perception and provide practical cost effective solutions.
  11. Ability to work well with others.
  12. Must possess and maintain a valid drivers license.

Preferences:

  1. Programming languages such as C or C# Visual Basic Digital Logic Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) or Microcontroller experience or course work.
