Job Description

The Young Carer Coordinator Great Southern with Carers WA is a full-time fixed-term position for 2 years. The position attracts a salary package of $95000 p.a. plus super and salary packaging 5 weeks annual leave (including 17.5% leave loading on annual leave) and two wellness days per annum.

About Carers WA:

Carers WA is the peak body representing the needs and interests of carers in Western Australia and is part of a national network of Carers Associations providing a range of support services supporting Carers across Western Australia. Carers provide unpaid care and support to family members and friends who have disability mental health challenges a chronic condition terminal illness an alcohol or other drug issue or who are frail aged.

About the role:

This is a work from home position based in Albany and is predominately outreach covering a far reach of the Great Southern region to engage young carers in their local schools homes and communities.

The role is responsible for delivering tailored place-based support to young carers predominantly aged 8-25 years in the Great Southern region as part of the Connected Futures project. The project is funded by the Stan Perron Foundation and aims to expand targeted educational and wellbeing support to young carers living in the Great Southern region.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Work within a person-centred and youth-informed framework.
  • Conduct holistic youth needs assessments to explore the educational social and emotional impacts of the caring role.
  • Co-develop action plans with the young carer.
  • Collaborate with schools service providers and community networks to improve local systems of support and build regional capacity to identify and respond to the needs of young carers.
  • work closely with metropolitan-based Carers WA staff to ensure consistent service delivery and participate in ongoing reflective practice supervision and professional development.

Carers WA promotes a workplace free of physical and psychological harm however acknowledges that some roles and inherent actions of our business mean there may be exposure to traumatic narratives. Typical stressors associated with this role may include handling challenging conversations remote or isolated work due to the outreach component of the role and exposure to complex and/or traumatic narratives. In these instances and where possible Carers WA will mitigate the impact of this exposure.

Selection Criteria:

  1. A relevant tertiary qualification in Social Work Youth Work Community Mental Health or related discipline.
  2. Minimum two years professional experience supporting vulnerable young people.
  3. Demonstrated ability conducting youth-friendly assessments and case coordination.
  4. Strong understanding of trauma-informed and strengths-based practice models and the ability to apply these in a regional context.
  5. Strong knowledge of education systems and practical knowledge of mental health and community services across WA with a specific awareness of regional challenges.
  6. Demonstrated ability to work with a high level of autonomy and accountability while maintaining strong and consistent communication with the broader team in a remote working environment.
  7. Demonstrated ability to engage respectfully with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander CALD and LGBTQIA communities.
  8. Competent in working under child safety frameworks and advocating for the rights and wellbeing of young people with knowledge of Rights of the Child and Child Safety Standards.
  9. High-level interpersonal and written communication skills with experience using Microsoft Office and client management databases.
  10. Willingness to travel regionally.
  11. Skills in public speaking at a variety of events including expos and workshops.
  12. National Police Clearance issued within the last 3 months (to be provided upon employment) a current C Class West Australian Driving Licence and current Working with Children Check.
