Job Description

Shenandoah Universitys Office of Academic Support is accepting applications for an Academic Advising Specialist. This is a full-time benefited position located on our main campus in Winchester Virginia.

Shenandoah Universitys Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) is seeking a dedicated and student-centered Academic Advising Specialist to join our dynamic team. Reporting to the Executive Director of ACE the Advising Specialist will provide holistic developmental academic advising and support services that promote student success retention and timely degree completion. This individual will work closely with students faculty and staff to ensure an exceptional advising experience that reflects Shenandoah Universitys commitment to academic excellence and student support.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide individualized academic advising to a diverse population of undergraduate students with an emphasis on first-year undeclared majors and transfer students.
  • Guide students in developing academic plans selecting courses exploring majors and understanding degree requirements.
  • Support students in identifying academic and personal challenges and refer them to appropriate campus resources.
  • Collaborate with faculty advisors department chairs and other university offices to ensure coordinated and consistent student support.
  • Participate in new student orientation registration events and academic workshops.
  • Monitor student progress and proactively conduct outreach to at-risk or academically struggling students.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date advising notes and records in accordance with university policies and FERPA guidelines.
  • Stay informed of institutional policies academic procedures and best practices in academic advising.
  • Support ACEs mission and strategic initiatives as directed by the Executive Director.

Required Skills

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelors degree from an accredited institution.
  • Strong interpersonal communication and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity equity and inclusion in student support practices.

Preferred:

  • Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in academic advising student affairs or a related higher education setting.

Working Conditions:

  • Primarily an office-based position with some evening or weekend responsibilities for events such as orientation and open house events.
