Duties and Responsibilities Pay Band A Position (PBA)

(NOTE: ** denotes Essential Functions)

  • **Serves as Educational Specialist for the STEM Pre-Academy program providing technical analytical and instructional support in K12 STEM education to program staff K12 educators and university and community partners.
  • **Performs moderately complex work including design and implementation of teacher workshops development of learning activities and resources and alignment of STEM Pre-Academy resources to K12 educational standards and UH initiatives under minimal supervision.
  • **Assists with the development maintenance and function of the lending library of STEM equipment with an emphasis on understanding and serving the needs of K12 teachers.
  • **Contributes to the development of technical and project reports publications and presentation materials.
  • **Engages in professional communication with a variety of audiences including program staff K12 educators and university faculty and staff.
  • Develops working knowledge of all aspects of the STEM Pre-Academy program in order to serve on cross-functional teams and projects and ensure alignment of work products to the strategic plan of the STEM Pre-Academy.
  • Assists with procurement record-keeping and other administrative or fiscal tasks.
  • Maintains professional knowledge and skills through continuing education certification courses professional organizations workshops conferences or other training.
  • Other duties as assigned

  • **Serves as Educational Specialist for the STEM Pre-Academy program providing technical analytical and instructional support in K12 STEM education to program staff K12 educators and university and community partners.
  • **Independently performs work of moderate to considerable complexity including design and implementation of teacher workshops development of learning activities and resources and alignment of STEM Pre-Academy resources to K12 educational standards and UH initiatives.
  • **Develops tools and resources aligned to the needs of K12 STEM teachers and UH research and innovation and generally assists with the development maintenance and function of the lending library of STEM equipment.
  • **Engages in professional communication with a variety of audiences including program staff K12 educators and university faculty and staff.
  • Serves on cross-functional teams and projects and ensures alignment of work products to the strategic plan of the STEM Pre-Academy.
  • Collaborates in the creation and refinement of technical documentation project reports publications and presentation materials to effectively communicate STEM related information to diverse audiences.
  • Coordinates procurement processes by preparing purchase requests liaising with vendors and ensuring compliance with organizational policies. Maintains detailed financial and administrative records supports budget tracking and reconciliation and assists with general office operations to promote efficiency and accountability
  • Maintains professional knowledge and skills through continuing education certification courses professional organizations workshops conferences or other training.

Minimum Qualifications - PBA

Education and Professional Work Experience

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in a STEM field STEM education or related field and 0 year(s) of professional experience with responsibilities for developing and/or implementing STEM learning activities or resources; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education knowledge skills and abilities as indicated.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Functional knowledge of principles practices and techniques in the area of STEM education demonstrated by knowledge understanding and ability to apply concepts terminology. STEM education knowledge may include a focus or concentration in science technology engineering or mathematics as an individual discipline but should include an awareness of all four areas and of integrated STEM in a K12 context.
  • Functional knowledge and understanding of principles theories federal and state laws rules regulations and systems associated with K12 and higher education in Hawaii.
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize problems identify possible causes and resolve the full range problems that may commonly occur in the area of STEM education.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation write reports and procedures and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations groups team members and individuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer apply word processing software and use collaboration/productivity technology tools.

Supplemental Minimum Qualifications PBA

  • Teaching experience in formal classroom or informal outreach settings including instruction for elementary middle high school undergraduate or graduate students or professional learning for K12 educators.
  • Availability to periodically work flexible hours including evenings and weekends to serve teacher and program needs.
  • Ability to travel independently throughout the state with occasional overnight or out of state travel.

Desirable Qualifications - PBA

  • Masters degree from an accredited university in a STEM field STEM education or related field.
  • Familiarity with State of Hawaii Department of Education STEM programs and requirements including content standards for science and engineering (NGSS) mathematics (Common Core) and computer science.
  • Classroom teaching experience preferably with students in grades 3 through 8 demonstrating effective instructional strategies tailored to this age group.
  • Proven ability to facilitate engaging workshops for K12 educators supporting professional development in STEM education.
  • Experience designing and developing lessons activities and assessments aligned with K12 educational standards ensuring instructional effectiveness and student learning outcomes.
  • Awareness of and engagement with research and innovation initiatives at the University of Hawaii integrating local advancements into STEM education.
  • Ability to travel to and from co-location sites in a timely manner by means of personal vehicle with valid drivers license or comparable means of transportation.

  • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws rules regulations and theories and systems associated with K12 and higher education in Hawaii.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective innovative and timely manner.
