Full-time Deputy Coroner

Hiring Range: $69000 - $83000. The maximum pay for this position is $96765.

This is a full-time deputy coroner position that includes not only death investigation but also administrative work. This position will Maintain Coroners facility Coroners vehicle Order all supplies. Maintains equipment including all IT equipment cameras and tools. Will assist by being a support and assisting other deputy coroners. The Full-Time Deputy Coroner prepares investigative reports and maintains records and statistics while also working closely with the Coroner writing SOPs and grants while also answering emails and calls on a daily basis.

Schedule: Mon-Fri 8 hours a day plus on call 8-10 days a month

Essential Functions:

• Works closely with the Coroner on performing administrative work that includes: Writing SOPs and Grants Answering general coroner emails on a daily basis Working with Eagle County employees in IT Human Resources Facilities
• Assisting with Interviewing and Hiring New Deputy Coroners Preparing Investigative Reports and Maintain Records and Statistics. Also helps manage and assists deputies as needed.
• Maintains Coroner facility Coroner vehicle supplies and orders all supplies. Maintains equipment including all IT equipment cameras and tools.
• Works closely with the State of Colorado/ EDR system and Colorado Coroners Association.
• Will be on-call anywhere from 5-10 days a month
• Respond to the scene of death and investigate the death scene photograph sketch and properly remove the body to the morgue.
• Collect physical evidence pertinent to the death investigation.
• Interview families friends professionals and others associated with the deceased.
• Obtain statements documents and related factual evidence.
• Examine and understand the medical records needed for a death investigation.
• Review information obtained to determine the cause of death and identify the deceased when necessary.
• Administer proper procedures in the notification of next-of-kin and releasing the property.
• Work with the forensic pathologist and have the necessary documentation for a forensic pathologist prior to autopsy.
• Confer with first responders fire and law enforcement agencies related to investigative cases.
• Observes safety and security procedures uses equipment and materials safely and reports potentially unsafe conditions.
• Serves the community by demonstrating Eagle County Governments mission and core values and following relevant policies and procedures.

Qualifications:

Education Experience Licensure Certification or Registration:

• Experience in death investigation and/or working with deceased persons
• Certified death investigator with the Colorado Coroners Association
• A minimum of an associates degree in related fields of medicine (paramedic/EMT nursing) or criminology is preferred but an equivalent combination of education and training provides the knowledge skills and abilities required for the job.
• Law enforcement field training or a minimum of 1-year experience.
• Medical field training or experience
• Requires a valid drivers license and a satisfactory driving record.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

• Colorado Coroners Statutes Colorado Revised Statutes pertaining to collection of evidence and search warrants.
• Skills in Investigative techniques interviewing techniques and procedures.
• Solves complex problems; takes a new perspective using existing solutions and excellent critical thinking.
• Excellent interpersonal team collaboration and communication skills.
• Ability to express ideas and information clearly and concisely in a manner appropriate to the audience both verbally and in writing.
• Strong understanding of the use of computers and cell phones and ability to type very well on a keyboard
