ADAPTIVE PHYSICAL EDUCATION TEACHER

JOB GOAL:
The Adaptive Physical Education (APE) Teacher will create and implement individualized physical education programs for students with disabilities ensuring they have access to physical activity and can participate in sports and exercises. The APE will assess students needs adapt traditional PE activities and collaborate with other professionals to provide a safe and supportive learning environment.
REPORTS TO:
Executive Director of Student Services and Building Administration
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Develop and implement individualized physical education programs for students with disabilities.
Assess students physical abilities and needs through various assessment tools.
Collaborate with classroom teachers therapists and parents to ensure a comprehensive educational approach.
Adapt traditional physical education activities to meet the specific needs of students.
Maintain detailed records of students progress and activities.
Coordinate and lead physical education activities during school events and special programs.
Implement safety protocols and ensure a safe learning environment for all students.
Advocate for students needs within the educational system.
Stay current with developments in adapted physical education through professional development and continuing education.
Utilize adaptive equipment and assistive technology as needed.
Responsible for routine care and maintenance of TCSD adaptive equipment.
Evaluate and report on the effectiveness of physical education programs.
Encourage social interaction and teamwork through group activities.
Coordinate lead and manage all TCSD District Special Olympics programs. This will require some after school duties and weekend travel.
Performs other duties as assigned from time to time be assigned by the supervisor.
CERTIFICATIONSKNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITY:
Bachelors degree in Physical Education.
Wyoming teacher certification with a K-6 or K-12 Adaptive Physical Education endorsement. (Applicants must be able to obtain a teaching certificate issued by the Wyoming Professional Teaching Standards Board ()
Experience working with children or adults with disabilities.
Strong understanding of different types of disabilities and their impact on physical activity.
Knowledge of adaptive physical education best practices.
Ability to create engaging and effective fitness programs tailored to individual needs.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
First Aid and CPR certification.
Experience with adaptive equipment and technologies.
Strong knowledge of physical education principles and practices.
Familiarity with assessment tools and techniques for evaluating physical abilities.
Ability to modify physical education activities to meet diverse needs.
Effective organizational and record-keeping skills.
Competence in collaboration and teamwork.
Basic understanding of legal requirements and regulations related to special education.
Passion for working with students with disabilities.
The School District places employees on salary schedules on the basis of:
Wyoming experience.
Out-of-state experience up to 7 years.
Degree Bachelors Masters or Doctorate.
Semester Graduate Credits beyond Degree.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Occasionally the employee will bend or twist at the neck more than the average person may need to lift arms to write on chalk or marking board and occasionally stoop kneel crouch and reach 0 - 24 inches and up to 36 inches above the head. The employee is directly responsible for the safety well-being and work output of other people. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed materialthe ability to adjust focus and exposure to screen(s) via technology. Hearing ability to monitor activity and presence of students and respond to communication with students and adults is required. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The noise level in the work environment is normally low to moderate but may become loud when large groups are together in a room. The employee may be required to move from room to room to provide instruction and may have to maneuver in crowded hallways. Duties are typically performed indoors and occasionally outdoors such as playground duty or when students are boarding or unloading buses. The employee may be exposed to unpredictable weather conditions. This position is typically performed in a hazard free clean and healthy environment.
