Lead Nurse

Job Description

Role Summary

The Lead Nurse Practitioner is integral to the school community and endeavors to manage the health and safety of all students and staff.

The role requires effective management communication and health promotion education; to encourage and maintain healthy lifestyles and a healthy school environment and identifying actual or potential health risks.

The Lead Nurse Practitioner is responsible for the safe and effective management of the first aid unit and the school nursing team.

The Lead Nurse Practitioner serves as liaison between school personnel family community and health care providers.

Facilitates the school nursing team in their roles to ensure students health and wellbeing is maintained. Allowing students to fully participate in an active school life and creating an individualised care plan where appropriate in partnership with the teaching staff and parents/guardians. This will ensure the effective management of health conditions in the school setting and reduce barriers to their educational progress.

Key Duties and Areas of Responsibility

  • To act as first responder to all medical emergencies occurring on school premises.
  • To provide medical care to students in the event of injury or acute illness whilst on school premises and allow them to return to class as soon as possible where appropriate.
  • To ensure all members of school nursing team work safely and competently within their scope of professional practice.
  • Provide clinical supervision to school nurse colleagues.
  • To head the development of the nursing staff and ensure their skills and competencies remain relevant and promote best practice.
  • To conduct appraisals for nursing staff and identify goals in accordance with the nurse and school needs.
  • To provide formal and informal teaching sessions to school nurses and teaching staff.
  • To liaise directly with HR and School principal any concerns in school nurse practice.
  • Heading and participating in the establishment review and implementation of school health policies and procedures.
  • Ensure policies and procedures adhere to legal and regulatory requirements and ethical standards of nursing practice.
  • Ensure the FAU is maintained with supplies and equipment and assists with developing and monitoring budgets.
  • To work in collaboration with Senior Leadership Team and Head of facilities to identify any potential risks to students and staff and provide support for any health and safety requirements.
  • Collaborates in the development of data collection tools required for program data compiles accurate data and uses findings for planning implementing and evaluating school health program.
  • Heads risk assessments of students medical needs attending educational visits off site. To discuss logistics with school nursing team and field trip coordinators.
  • To ensure relevant first aid kits care plans additional training and medication as indicated are prepared by the team.
  • To provide UK registered certified first aid training based on European resuscitation guidelines to staff and students.
  • To assess referrals made by teaching staff which have been escalated using both the relevant Triage structure and First Aid Unit (FAU) attendance policy.
  • To assess referrals made by other staff members school visitors and parents/guardians.
  • To make appropriate referrals to outside organisations i.e. CAMHS and secondary care.
  • To work in collaboration with the School Counselor to ensure the mental health needs of staff and students are met.
  • To ensure school nurse team perform required observations and evaluate vital signs to assess severity and identify / accurately and can implement an appropriate management plan.
  • To ensure the school nursing team work within their scope of practice and adhere to all policies and procedures.
  • To ensure the school nursing team implement clinic guidelines on safe management of the First Aid Unit.
  • To ensure that the school nurse team monitor students own emergency / personal medication and liaise with parents in accordance
  • To lead and develop individual care plans for students with chronic illnesses and specific care needs in partnership with parents/guardians and teaching staff.
  • To support arrangements where required for a student or member of staff to safely travel home or to an alternative care setting (i.e. GP / Hospital).
  • To maintain strict confidentiality of sensitive communication and documentation and keep an up-to-date record of students and staff with medical conditions.
  • To ensure the school nursing team provide timely updates of students medical records with sufficient triage notes and any other information as indicated.
  • To review students medical records admissions or withdrawals throughout the academic year.
  • To provide in-class teaching and education to enhance student/ staff knowledge and assist their learning.
  • To ensure that all annual measurements and record Growth Monitoring and Visual Acuity are carried out in compliance with the Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) guidelines and inform parents of any concerns. Review any discrepancies.
  • To participate in meetings as requested by the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) e.g. pastoral meetings.
  • To ensure first aid clinic is staffed in compliance with the QCHP clinic license and escalate to line manager in the event of any staffing issues.
  • To liaise with parents Heads of Schools and the Principal regarding escalated medical concerns and updates.
  • Development and provision of health education leaflets/letters to parents.
  • To report communicable diseases to staff members Head of School Principle and the MOPH without delay.
  • Review log of monthly clinical waste collected.
  • To review daily list of students who attend the first aid unit as per Qatar Council for Health Practitioners (QCHP).
  • To lead on the licensing process of the First Aid Clinic to ensure that the license remains valid and renewed on time with QCHP. Including clinical waste contracts.
  • To always work within the NMC and QHCP Code of Professional Conduct and Scope of Professional Practice.

Required Skills and Knowledge

  • Bachelors Degree in Nursing
  • At least 5 years of working experience
  • Valid Nursing License from the Ministry of Health at State of Qatar
  • Updated First Aid Training & Child Protection
  • Up to date knowledge and compliance to Ministry of Education Ministry of Health Local Municipalities and or other relevant Ministry Directives/Laws
  • Background/experience preferred in pediatric nursing community health nursing critical care nursing medical-surgical nursing and/or emergency room nursing.
  • An in-depth knowledge of best nursing practices with a high degree of professionalism to support the whole School.
  • Excellent communication organisational skills and the ability to prioritise multiple tasks.
  • A supportive co-operative team member who shows initiative and a willingness to improve processes.

Desirable requirements

  • Experience of providing clinical training and education.
  • Knowledge of local public health issues.
  • Experience in pediatric emergency nursing.
  • Understanding of the health needs assessment process.
  • Excellent judgement involving complex facts or situations which require the analysis interpretation and comparison of a range of options.
