POSITION SUMMARY

The Manager Pharmacy is responsible for the day-to-day management and coordination of services from and to pharmacy. This role is also involved in continuous quality improvement technology coordination pharmacy compounding and patient safety duties.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Departmental Management:

  • Perform duties of a Designated Pharmacy Manager for the pharmacy as stipulated by the Ontario College of Pharmacists (OCP).
  • Responsible for day-to-day operations and management of the Pharmacy to provide continuity of care for pharmaceutical services to CHEO patients their family and staff.
  • Act as the point of leadership and accountability for pharmacy staff within the pharmacy.
  • Manage all activities within CHEO related to medication and is responsible for the safe accurate and efficient dispensing of medications.
  • Manage medications and related health technologies recalls shortage and back orders.
  • Conduct periodic review of operations in each area to ensure efficiency/proper allocation and adequate use of resources.
  • Manage human resources effectively which includes but is not limited to:
  • Hiring and scheduling staff managing staff performance and attendance.
  • Conducting performance appraisals and managing performance related issues including identifying necessary disciplinary action.
  • Ensure staff have the required resources to carry out their functions.
  • Supervise all work performed by the pharmacy technicians which includes dispensing of medication hazardous non-hazardous sterile and non-sterile compounding calculations etc.
  • Perform the duties of a preceptor for pharmacy students and interns.
  • Responsible for training and/or orienting new pharmacy staff members with respect to drug distribution pharmaceutical service and pharmacotherapy aspects.
  • Monitor key performance indicators for areas such as number of prescriptions workload measurement tool.
  • Actively participate in the pharmacy budget analysis identification of variances and recommendations of action plans. Manage the assigned budget including but not limited to monitoring expenses processing payments and supervising all financial transactions.
  • Provide drug information to physicians nurses and other members of the health care team as well as to patients.
  • Maintain work areas in clean and orderly fashions.
  • Authorize selected purchase orders.
  • Responsible for the pharmacy Quality Assurance program drug utilization reviews workload measurements.
  • Maintain professional conduct and standards in all aspects of his/her work and when interacting with hospital staff and the public.
  • Maintain clinical expertise in at least one area of clinical pharmacy practice.
  • Attend and actively participate in departmental and hospital meetings such as pharmacist meeting Staff Meeting Education seminars.
  • Initiate and lead capital budget requests.
  • Ensure all pharmacy shifts are covered for weekdays and week-end days including day evening and nightshifts.
  • Support the KidCare pharmacy manager and team by covering for vacations or leave of absence.

Pharmacy Operational Service Development Evaluation and Safety Reporting:

  • Initiate and participate in the development implementation and evaluation of the pharmacy programs and services.
  • Participate in development revision and implementation of policies and procedures as needed.
  • Participate in quality control process and improvement initiatives in collaboration with the Director of Pharmacy.
  • Work with clinical teams to proactively develop models for an efficient pharmacy service.
  • Follow up on and implementation of recommendations by consultants when required in collaboration with the Director of Pharmacy.
  • Investigate any incidents under Pharmacy management and medication related and initiate follow-up and complete incident reports.
  • Participate in the monthly workplace inspection as well as the safety rounds and lead the recommended changes.
  • Responsible for follow up regarding all quality control and risk management reports (PPE N95 etc.).
  • Represent the interests of CHEO Pharmacy and/or the Hospital by establishing networks and building partnerships.
  • Maintain knowledge of current hospital and pharmacy policies as well as current OCP pharmacy practice guidelines and ensure compliance.

Pharmacy Operational Services Strategy and Pharmacy Research:

  • Participate in the development of Corporate Goals and Objectives and provide recommendations to the Director of Pharmacy.
  • Contribute and/or assist in the organization of departmental publications and presentations.
  • Assist clinical teams in operationalizing clinical research.

Project Management and Coordination:

  • Initiate / participate in various projects surrounding the coordination of care and strategic development of the Pharmacy as delegated by the Director of Pharmacy.
  • Coordinate clinical projects in collaboration with the Pharmacy patient leadership team clinical managers assistant managers clinical educators nurses dietitians physicians and other CHEO key stakeholders.
  • Participate and lead on hospital or departmental committees and undertake special projects as assigned by the Director of Pharmacy.

Other

  • Perform work in accordance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and all CHEO corporate/departmental policies and procedures related to Occupational Health and Safety.
  • Perform other related duties as required and assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Vulnerable Sector Check (Essential)
  • Graduate of a Pharmacy degree from a recognized university (Essential)
  • Licensed Pharmacist with Ontario College of Pharmacists (OCP) Part A (Essential)
  • Masters Degree in Pharmacy MBA MHA or Hospital Pharmacy Residency Program (Preferred)
  • Five (5) years of experience in pharmacy (Essential)
  • Pharmacy experience in a hospital setting (Preferred)
  • Clinical experience in a related setting (Preferred)
  • Demonstrated expertise in a leadership role (Essential)
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage changes (Essential)
  • Superior communication skills both oral and written (Essential)
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills (Essential)
  • Bilingualism in English and French (Preferred)
