Job Description

Early Childhood Educator Assistant Float

Wage: $20-$21.75 /hour

Reports to: Childcare Program Team Lead

Team Size: This role works within a team of up to 4 educators.

Hours/work schedule: Permanent Full-time position with a maximum of 40 hrs/week Monday-Friday. Scheduled shifts may fall between 7:30 am- 5:30 pm.

Position Overview

The Early Childhood Educator Assistant float is responsible for assisting with daily programming supporting families and promoting childrens day-to-day success in the centre.

In this position the educator will deliver high-quality care in accordance with our philosophy and develop and implement a developmentally appropriate emergent curriculum while ensuring the health and safety of all children are met through Child Care Licensing Regulations and Fernwood NRG Child Care policies.


Responsibilities

  • Ensures the health and wellbeing of the children by being supportive caring and present.

  • Primary point of contact for parents and guardians.

  • Promotes social-emotional wellbeing by identifying and labelling emotions in self and others.

  • Designs supportive emergent and inclusive environments.

  • Promotes a childs social-emotional development through individual observations and activities.

  • Establishes and implements clear appropriate rules limits and guidelines for developmentally appropriate behaviour.

  • Builds and maintains professional working relationships with parents guardians and coworkers.

  • Assists with daily cleaning and sanitizing.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions / Equipment Used

  • The work environment is diverse necessitating clear communication and an approach of curiosity rather than judgment.

  • Shared spaces and furniture require some physical exertion including the ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds such as chairs tables and mats.

  • The shared work environment may be busy and loud.

  • As a community center operates as a public space there may be occasions when individuals or families in crisis seek assistance requiring adherence to organizational protocols and safety procedures for interventions.

  • Ability to stand for long periods run occasionally crouch and bend frequently.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Must hold a current BC ECEA Certificate.

  • Minimum 1-year experience working in a Childcare Program.

  • Current First Aid Certified.

  • Familiarity with or ability to quickly gain familiarity with BC Child Care Licensing Regulations.

  • Ability to work very well in team settings.

  • Ability to work positively in a shared work environment.

  • Ability to appreciate diversity different opinions lived experiences backgrounds and personality types.

  • Ability to communicate clearly orally and in writing with parents/caregivers children and colleagues in a primarily English-language context.

  • Ability to problem-solve and prioritize tasks.

  • Ability to take initiative.

  • Ability to follow instructions and willingness to assume and carry out assigned tasks and to be accountable for results and actions including quality of work.

  • An understanding of and commitment to the importance of client confidentiality.

  • Dependable including the ability to maintain good attendance and be reliable and punctual.

  • Professional responsive with a positive work attitude.

Assets

  • Experience with managing confidential information

  • Experience communicating orally and in writing with empathy and clarity

  • Experience building professional trusting relationships with parents caregivers and/or young children

  • Experience resolving miscommunications and interpersonal conflicts

  • Strong emotional self-awareness and desire to strengthen your skills

  • Oral communication skills in languages spoken in our neighbourhood other than English e.g. Japanese Arabic French

  • Experience building strong relationships with Indigenous people communities and/or Nations particularly in the context of children and youth

  • Experience building strong relationships across differences in ethnicity income level gender identity sexual orientation spiritual/religious beliefs physical and mental ability and culture

  • Additional training and/or lived experience in infant and toddler development and wellbeing

  • Roots in/connection to the Fernwood community

  • Knowledge of local family-friendly resources activities and supports


Other Requirements

Candidates who progress through our selection process will be required to provide the following before an employment agreement is finalized.

  • Must provide a record of immunization status.

  • Must provide two professional references.

  • All employees at Fernwood NRG are required to undergo a Vulnerable Sector Criminal Record Check upon hiring.


Unionized Position

Fernwood Neighbourhood House is a unionized workplace and this position is part of the BC General Employees Union (BCGEU) bargaining unit. We are currently negotiating our first collective agreement. The compensation package for this role reflects current wages and benefits with adjustments anticipated once the collective agreement is finalized.


Please note that following the ratification of the collective agreement union dues will be deducted from employees pay in accordance with the terms outlined in the collective agreement and BCGEU policies.
