Job Type:Part-Time

Work Schedule:Part-time (20 hours/week); flexible hours between 8 AM 5 PM. Ideally 34 days per week.

Location: Fairfax VA

Workplace Type:Hybrid Eligible (2 days onsite); full onsite presence required during the first month

Salary:Starting rate $20/hr commensurate with education and experience

About the Department:

Support the University mission through the development and implementation of policies programs and practices that attract retain and reward faculty and staff.

About the Position:

The Benefits Assistant provides a high level of customer service to applicants staff and faculty of George Mason University (GMU). Works to problem-solve issues that arise within the benefits department and assists with special projects and tasks assigned.

Due to the nature of the work this position is not open to current students.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs regular audits of benefits records and transactions to ensure accuracy compliance and adherence to internal controls;
  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams (e.g. Payroll) to investigate and resolve variances or anomalies in financial/benefits records;
  • Provides administrative and customer support for the Benefits team by navigating the web and GMU databases (Banner and Cardinal) meeting in-person and virtually with faculty and staff and responding to emails in a shared mailbox to problem solve and answer questions about employee benefits;
  • Assists with various benefits processes including health and retirement enrollments updates termination and troubleshooting;
  • Provides excellent in-person and virtual customer service to faculty and staff in a friendly and courteous manner following established guidelines and procedures;
  • Audits published communications and websites to ensure accuracy and relevance; and
  • Assists with special projects as needed.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience collaborating and communicating effectively with individuals of differing needs;
  • Excellent accuracy and attention to detail;
  • Ability to engage and communicate with empathy to provide excellent customer service through verbal and written communication;
  • Ability to act with tact and diplomacy;
  • Ability to work independently to prioritize daily work activities and willingness to be flexible; and
  • Skill in the use of Microsoft Office Suite (Word Excel PowerPoint) and creation of marketing materials.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of basic Human Resources concepts and practices or procedures related to benefits administration;
  • Knowledge of accounting or payroll principles and practices relevant to reconciliation and internal controls;
  • Experience with Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS) such as Ellucian Banner and marketing material platforms such as Canva;
  • Proficiency in Spanish; and
  • Experience working in a higher education environment.
