Job Description

Reporting to the Manager Student Advisement the incumbent is the Senior Adviser within the Student Advisement team providing case advice to other advisers and leading the competency development of Student Advisers Student Experience Specialists and additional staff within the team. The Senior Adviser is also responsible for training all Student Advisement staff as well as developing and delivering educational modules for faculty staff and administrators across the College with respect to advising and supporting students. The Senior Adviser takes the lead role in liaising/collaborating with the Academic Faculties and other service areas for the purpose of understanding issues sharing student concerns and presenting information about the Advisement team. During peak periods the Senior Adviser provides developmental advising to students who are unclear about their next steps regarding any aspect of their Sheridan experience. The Senior Adviser represents Student Advisement and/or Student Affairs on College committees when required.

What Youll Be Doing

  • Acting as a mentor guide and role model to staff as the expert to provide knowledge advice training experience and personal insight;
  • Acting as a consultant to the other advisers as complex or unique student cases arise;
  • Coordinating case conferences with appropriate Sheridan specialist(s) to resolve individual student needs;
  • Developing and implementing the Student Advisement training program and plan for Student Advisers Student Experience Specialists and other staff;
  • Collaborating with the Manager Student Advisement to determine the execution of training activities;
  • Reviewing and revising content and mode of delivery to ensure accuracy of information through outreach to each academic program and to various Sheridan business units;
  • Leading and participating in collaborative efforts to develop and deliver student support/retention initiatives aimed at enhancing academic success the quality of the student experience and service to students;
  • Employing Developmental Advising techniques to support students through in-person email phone or video technology modalities;
  • Evaluating and assessing students concerns and issues about their next steps regarding any aspect of their Sheridan experience in order to determine appropriate options and solutions;
  • Coaching students through barriers that are preventing them from taking the next steps or from succeeding academically through one-on-one small group meetings or workshop settings;
  • Providing explanation of options and assisting students to prioritize and develop a course of action that leads to an effective solution. Such tailored action plans often include referrals to other Sheridan specialists;
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.

About You

You have a keen understanding of holistic student development and the unique philosophies and theories that inform advising practice in higher education and the ability to apply these frameworks to complex advising encounters.

You have excellent verbal and written communication skills along with effective listening probing and assessment skills.

You are committed to the principles of empowerment integration and inclusion and are a student/client centered individual with a passion for facilitating student success and enhancing the student experience.

You enjoy working with diverse populations are able to apply principles of inclusivity and inter-cultural competence and are committed to centring equity diversity and inclusion to meet the needs of a diverse student population.

The successful candidate will also meet the following qualifications:

  • 4-year degree in Business Education Social Science Psychology Education or a related field
  • 5 years of progressive experience in an educational environment (post-secondary preferred) or a combination of educational and social services environments where responsibilities included: assessing and advising clients preparing and presenting educational topics to groups of students writing and delivering training programs to groups designing and writing policy and procedural manuals collecting recording analyzing reporting and presenting statistics (equivalency to be considered)
  • Experience identifying and responding to students in crisis and distress
