Purpose:

Oversees the day-to-day technical and administrative operations of a laboratory including conducting some of the scientific activities and experimentation of the laboratory ensuring the safe and proper use care calibration and maintenance of the laboratorys equipment and other scientific resources such as databases animal colonies sample collection etc). Administers the laboratorys day-to-day operations including inventory maintenance ordering of supplies tracking expenditures against project budgets and assisting with administration of laboratory personnel.

Typical tasks and duties:

Laboratory and Operations Management

  • Manages and oversees the daily operations and finances of a laboratory or technical operation for a department including responsibility for budget purchasing inventory maintenance of financial reports and administration of staff.

  • Ensures the safe and proper use of laboratorys equipment.

  • Ensures appropriate maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment.

Financial Operations

  • Tracks expenditures against project budgets.

  • Advises Principal Investigator of significant budget deviations.

  • Attributes to research grant and contract accounts with appropriate documentation and justification as may be required.

Personnel supervision

  • Supervises operational activities of staff and students working in the laboratory.

  • Provides guidance and expert advice to staff and students on technical issues safety procedures and regulatory compliance matters within the laboratory. Monitors operations to ensure compliance.

  • Instructs and demonstrates analysis techniques and procedures to laboratory staff and students.

  • Ensures that new students or employees are familiar with laboratory operational requirements.

Scientific Operations

  • Performs background research and literature searches as needed evaluates results and formulates recommendations as needed. Researches and determines the applicability of new technology and systems related to work.

  • Develops new or modifies existing specialized techniques test procedures and standards under general direction from senior professional staff. Monitors safety and provides guidance on safe use of equipment.

  • Researches designs and analyzes the results of novel experiments. Selects and uses appropriate procedures equipment and standards to produce required data; assists in analysis and interpretation.

  • Sets up tests and calibrates testing equipment.

  • Assists professional staff in diagnosing causes of system equipment or material failures. Identifies possible solutions to problems.

  • Ensures that all data and analytical results are maintained in a satisfactory manner.

  • Works with internal and external partners to ensure effective implementation of joint experimental programs in support of collaborative research projects.

Regulatory Management

  • Ensures that security and safety protocols regarding Occupational Health and Safety codes are followed.

  • Ensures adherence to all applicable regulatory requirements including those applying to human and animal subjects hazardous materials radiation controlled goods etc all technical and operational staff students and authorized equipment users.

Other

  • As assigned and under the direction of the Principal Investigator conducts independent research activities in support of laboratory operational requirements.

  • Any other related duties required by the research projects or management of the research laboratory or analytical facility.

Knowledge skills education and experience:

  • . in a relevant discipline and three to five years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of experience and educational qualifications.

  • Experience in research and /or laboratory operations.

  • Ability to work safely with reagents hazardous and biohazardous materials.

  • Excellent technical skills analytical ability judgment with a strong operational focus.

  • Demonstrated organizational and prioritization skills.

  • Excellent communications skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal technical scientific and communications skills (written/oral).

  • Advanced written and verbal skills in English or French. Bilingualism spoken and written is preferred.

Prior to May 1 2022 the University required all students faculty staff and visitors (including contractors) to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 as defined in Policy 129 Covid-19 Vaccination. This policy was suspended effective May 1 2022 but may be reinstated at any point in the future depending on public health guidelines and the recommendations of experts.
