PROGRAM DETAILS:The Take a Hike Program at John Oliver Secondary School is a district-specified Alternative program for Grade 10-12 youth who are at risk. Staffing for this position consists of one teacher one Youth & Family Worker one shared-position adventure-based learning instructor and one therapist (provided by the Take a Hike Foundation). The four staff assigned to the program work with up to 22 youth who are considered at-risk for a variety of reasons. The Take a Hike Program includes a combination of outdoor activities field studies classroom-based academics and potentially overnight trips of 1-10 days in duration.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Education
  • BC Teaching Certificate (TRB)
  • Registration with the Teacher Qualification Service (TQS)
  • Current certification in Advanced Back-Country First Aid (or equivalent) and CPR certification
  • Academic training and/or qualifications in the Math and Science but familiarity with the other subject areas would be an asset as well as knowledge of current computer technology (MyEducaton BC Microsoft Office CBIEP).
  • Strong background working with youth at risk group dynamics leadership development and previous experience guiding youth on single- and multi-day trips (an updated trip log is considered an asset for an application to this position)
  • Certification and/or training as well as teaching experience in hiking backpacking ocean kayaking canoeing rock climbing cycle touring and essential outdoor skills (minimum impact camping outdoor cooking first aid map and compass skills weather interpretation snow shelter construction equipment preparation clothing selections trip planning etc.)
  • Knowledge and experience in winter backcountry wilderness travel
  • Avalanche Skills and Safety Training (AST 1) is considered an asset
  • Knowledge of and practice in risk management for adventure-based learning opportunities
  • Knowledge of and experience with trauma-informed practice and social-emotional learning strategies
  • Familiarity with the redesigned curriculum teaching methods and assessment practices.
  • Familiarity with case management and the IEP development process
