BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:
In 2021 WFP efforts to helping countries to establish and maintain nationally owned programmes as well as implementing school meals programmes with clear hand over strategies were taken to the next level with the launch of the School Meals Coalition at the Food Systems Summit.
For more than 60 years WFP has been the leading organization in supporting countries with their school meals programmes which are widely prevalent throughout the world.
In 2020 WFP launched a 10-year strategy for school meals. WFP advocates for the universal adoption of school meals programmes as a safety net that helps increase childrens access to education and learning opportunities and strengthens their health and nutrition status. WFP focuses increasingly on helping countries to establish and maintain nationally owned programmes. In countries still requiring WFPs operational support it implements school meals programmes with clear hand over strategies.
WFP is seeking to hire a qualified and experienced individual to serve as Advocacy Officer for the School Meals Coalition Secretariat Team hosted at WFP. Reporting to the Head of Advocacy and Communications she/he will be expected to support the implementation of WFPs advocacy plan in support of the School Meals Coalition and support the visibility and partnership of advocacy efforts within the School Meals and Social Protection Service.
ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the supervision of the Head of Advocacy and Communications and in close coordination with other colleagues the consultant will be responsible for the following key duties:
- Proactively map identify and seize advocacy opportunities and events to help accelerate WFP and the School Meals Coalitions global school meals agenda contributing to a team calendar of key moments.
- Identify advocacy opportunities for engagement with the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty.
- Play a key role on advocacy efforts related to UN climate talks COP ensuring linkages with the School Meals Coalition and its initiatives.
- Developing and disseminating well-researched clear concise advocacy briefs map out key targets stakeholders opportunities messages and way forward with specific recommendations.
- Performing any other duties in support of the Head of Advocacy and Communications or of other teams in the service.
DELIVERABLES AT THE END OF THE CONTRACT:
Deliverables to include:
- Produce at least 3 well-researched clear concise advocacy briefs with priority on planet-friendly content.
- Identify and pursue at least 5 high impact advocacy opportunities that strengthen the core
activities carried out by the School Meals Coalition.
- Contribute to the overall advocacy efforts of the School Meals Coalition Secretariat.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Education:
Advanced University degree in Social Science Political Science Journalism International Relations Public Relations Communications or relevant field or First University degree with additional years of related work experience and/or trainings/courses.
Experience:
Minimum of 5 year of related experience in communication partnerships or advocacy both in humanitarian and development sector. At least 5 years of experience engaging with international financial institutions.
