Description

To support academic staff to provide assistance in problem classes for honours mathematics modules and service modules. To assist with exam invigilation for honours mathematics modules and service modules.


Start Date:22 September 2025
End Date: 31 July 2026
Working Hours:during teaching term weeks hours of work will vary depending on module requirements.
Pay Rate: 15.56 per hour plus holiday pay
Location: University Park Campus

About the Role

This role is suitable for PGR students from the School of Mathematical Sciences PGR students from the Faculty of Science and Faculty of Engineering will be considered for Year 1 modules.

Postgraduate students support the teaching of undergraduates who study modules in the School of Mathematical Sciences these are referred to as Teaching Support roles. Tasks include demonstrating in problems classes and assisting with exam invigilation. You will also be asked to apply to our Teaching Affiliate role for tasks including undertaking marking of coursework assignments and class tests. Such work not only offers financial reward but gives valuable teaching experience

The allocation of demonstrators to modules offered by the School of Mathematical Sciences will take place in early September for the new teaching term at the end of will be invited to complete a form to express your preferences for specific modules. Please be aware whilst we try to match your preference to module allocation you may be asked to demonstrate on any module depending on School needs. The general rule we will follow is that everyone can cover 1st year modules and then well try to assign modules from 2nd year up according to research areas/specialisms as far as possible.

PGR students from other areas of the faculty will be considered for 1st year modules and only for 2nd year modules if they have sufficient prior knowledge of the subject.

Duties and Responsibilities:

To support academic staff to provide assistance in problem classes for honours mathematics modules and service modules. To assist with exam invigilation for honours mathematics modules and service modules.

Preparation for class:

  • Review the class materials including answer or solution sheets.

During a class:

  • Arrive promptly for the start of the class.
  • Circulate room to respond to student questions.
  • Prompt students to ask how they are progressing with specific problems.

Hours of Work: To be arranged hours of work will vary depending on module requirements. The module convenor will confirm this with you prior to the start of the teaching term.

Hours per week per student: To be arranged on a module by module basis. A list of module tasks and expected time commitments will be shared with Demonstrators prior to module allocation.

Training: Prior to the start of teaching Demonstrators will be required to attend School-based will also be required to complete two safeguarding training courses through the Universitys short courses programme.

Allocation of work: we will take your module preference into consideration however you may be asked to demonstrate on any module depending on School needs. PGR students in the School of Mathematical Sciences are expected to be able to cover any 1st year modules 2nd and 3rd year modules will be assigned according to research areas/specialisms as far as possible.

PGR students from other areas of the faculty will be considered for 1st year modules and only for 2nd year modules if they have sufficient prior knowledge of the subject.

About you

This role is suitable for current PGR student in the School of Mathematical Science.

Current PGR students from the faculties of Science or Engineering will also be considered if you have a solid understanding of 1st year level undergraduate maths.

Skills:

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills in English.
  • Ability to teach modules in honours and service mathematics.
  • Commitment to high standards.
  • Ability to work inclusively in a multidisciplinary and multicultural team across several sites.
  • Familiarity with digital tools to support teaching and learning in mathematics such as Virtual Learning Environments (e.g. Moodle).
  • Demonstrators will be friendly and approachable they will not assume the level of prior knowledge or level of understanding.

Knowledge and experience:

  • Knowledge of mathematics or related discipline.

Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate/masters degree in mathematics or related discipline.
