Job Description

The Research Scientist advances the mission of the Tennessee Aquarium Conservation Institute (TNACI) by conducting field and laboratory research in support of programs in aquatic conservation biology. This individual conducts field surveys of aquatic species to determine conservation status or to measure stream community health. They also collect analyze and interpret genetic data to inform recovery and reintroduction strategies. They regularly assist in recording compiling and interpreting scientific data for grant reports scientific collecting permits and contracts. The Research Scientist also disseminates research results to a wide variety of audiences and mentors research fellows advanced science students and other partner institutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Develops and conducts field and laboratory research to advance TNACIs conservation science projects and inform decision-making in aquatic ecology population genetics and status surveys.
- Serves as a lead for field crews with expertise in field identifications of aquatic species for at least one taxonomic group in southeastern freshwater habitats.
- Conducts genetic data collection and analyses to advise on emerging issues for aquatic species recovery and reintroduction programs at TNACI.
- Works with the grants team to develop funding proposals for projects and coordinates with reporting requirements.
- Collaborates with conservation partners including government agency personnel non-profit partners university faculty and students to work towards the recovery of threatened and endangered aquatic animals in the Southeast.
- Mentors research fellows and TNACI assistants in research methodology and interpretation of results.
- Disseminates the results of research to scientists and non-scientists through publications presentations traditional and social media and outreach activities.
- Provides expertise on emerging aquatic conservation issues for traditional and social media interviews.
Key Requirements
- Ph.D. in a relevant scientific discipline such as Biology Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Environmental Sciences Fisheries and Wildlife Biology or Natural Resources is required.
- Conservation genomics expertise is preferred.
- Three years experience conducting field and laboratory research in a relevant field.
- Proven success in funding and fulfilling research conservation and grant awards.
- Advanced proficiency in various Microsoft applications including utilizing advanced features and functionalities for complex Excel tasks and projects.
- Strong skills in operational analysis planning budgeting forecasting and cash management with a firm understanding of internal controls decision analysis financial technology risk management and substantial experience in financial modeling and data analysis.
- Excellent organizational administrative and project management skills.
- Knowledge of business law and regulations with a focus on non-profit operations.
- Positive leadership effective communication interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
- Organization and ability to track progress on multiple projects simultaneously.
- Strong computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft 365 statistical software and bioinformatics software.
- Expertise in field identifications for at least one taxonomic group found in southeastern freshwater habitats.
- Passion for translating freshwater conservation issues to the general public.
- Valid Drivers License is required to operate Aquarium vehicles.
Full-time salaried ($57000 $71000/year commensurate on education and experience); Occasional overnight trips and weekend work as necessary.
