Thurston County Auditors Office is recruiting for an Internal Auditor to manage the Countys Internal Audit Function. Thurston Countys Internal Audit Function is administratively housed within the Auditors Office. The Internal Auditor reports administratively to the Chief Deputy Auditor and functionally to the Internal Audit Committee. The Internal Audit Committee members include the County Auditor County Manager and County Treasurer. The mission of Thurston Countys internal audit function is to enhance and protect organizational value by providing risk-based and objective assurance advice and insight.
Essential functions may include but are not limited to the following:
- Conduct an annual countywide risk assessment to develop the internal audit plan.
- Plan develop and execute the annual internal audit plan under the direction of the Internal Audit Committee.
- Develop and present audit reports to management and the Internal Audit Committee.
- Serve as the Countys liaison with the State Auditors Office.
- Perform follow-up on audit recommendations and provide status updates to the Internal Audit Committee.
- Provide guidance to County offices and departments on laws policies best practices internal controls risk management and process improvements.
- Maintain the internal auditing policy and procedures in conformance with the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) Global Internal Audit Standards.
- Maintain independence objectivity integrity and exercise due professional care in all audit engagements.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work Environment Quiet office setting located in Olympia Washington. Work is primarily performed at a desk or workstation using a computer and standard office equipment. Hybrid and remote work options are available based on business needs and performance.
- Schedule Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Occasional extended hours may be required to meet critical deadlines. Alternative work schedules may be available.
- Travel Requirements Limited travel may be required to attend meetings trainings or provide onsite support to other offices and departments.
- Customer Interactions Regular interaction with internal customers including elected officials department staff and other government agencies. Communication occurs via phone email virtual meetings and in-person consultations.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelors degree with major course work in accounting.
- Three years of experience in auditing of financial accounting systems.
- Professional experience as an internal or external auditor of accounting systems.
DESIRED SKILLS:
- Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) and/or Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
- Five or more years of experience working as internal auditor for a governmental or public sector organization.
- Strong knowledge of internal auditing standards including the IIA Global Internal Audit Standards and Government Audit Standards (Yellow Book).
- Experience preparing and presenting audit plans findings and recommendations to executive leadership and oversight committees.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently with a high level of integrity and sound professional judgment in sensitive or complex situations.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills including the ability to explain complex audit issues clearly to non-technical audiences.
- Proficiency in audit tools data analytics software and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel Word PowerPoint).
- Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and governmental accounting practices.
- Professional certifications such as Certified Government Auditing Professional (CGAP) Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) or Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA).
