Job Description
Position Title: Senior Accountant Construction Accounting
Location: Bethesda MD (Onsite 5 days/week during training potential for 1 day remote after 36 months)
Overview:
A prominent general contracting firm in the DC Metro area is seeking a skilled Senior Accountant to support day-to-day construction accounting operations. This role will work directly with the Controller and serve as a critical liaison between the accounting function and project managers in the field. Key Responsibilities:
Process subcontractor payments and accounts payable
Manage accounts receivable and cash receipts
Review lien waivers contracts and related subcontractor documents
Handle monthly bank and general ledger reconciliations
File sales and use taxes (DC MD VA)
Oversee invoice workflow ensuring approvals and project accuracy
Assist with year-end audits and support staff accountants on ongoing projects
Review work tied to building enhancements and new construction
Maintain communication with project managers to coordinate on-site needs
Conduct weekly check runs and ensure compliance with internal controls
Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in Accounting (strongly preferred) or Finance with heavy accounting coursework
7 years of relevant accounting experience including work in construction or real estate development
Strong understanding of general contractor workflows and month-end close processes
Familiarity with subcontractor documents WIP reporting and AIA billing
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with field teams and leadership
Experience with JD Edwards or similar ERP systems preferred
Strong Excel skills and solid command of accounting principles
