NDDOT Hiring Salary:

Transportation Engineer III: $7243 / month

Transportation Engineer II: $5999 / month*

Transportation Engineer I: $5403 / month*

Join our team as a Transportation Engineer specializing in Bridge Load Rating to help manage and maintain North Dakotas critical bridge assets. In this role you will utilize Load Rating software to evaluate the load carrying capacity of both new and existing structures to ensure public safety. This position will also ensure the NDDOT is in compliance with the National Bridge Inspection Program collaborating with engineers inspectors and stakeholders you will contribute to innovative solutions that enhance the safety efficiency and longevity of the states transportation infrastructure.

Primary Duties Include:

Bridge Load Rating

  • Perform load ratings on new and existing structures utilizing AASHTOWare Bridge Rating (BrR) software in accordance with the AASHTO Manual for Bridge Evaluation (MBE) and NDDOT Load Rating Manual.
  • Ensure all load ratings meet federal compliance according to the 23 Metrics for the Oversight of the National Bridge Inspection Program.
  • Analyze bridges for oversize/ overweight loads. Maintain load rating data files to support the Automated Routing System.
  • Review and assess requests for 129K lb. load implementation.

Metric Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with the 23 Metrics for the Oversight of the National Bridge Inspection Program.
  • Provide data and prepare required reports for FHWA including quarterly metric compliance reports annual data submittal annual bridge replacement cost Improvement Plan updates and Plan of Corrective Action updates.
  • Verify that inspection type and frequency are consistent with the requirements of the 23 CFR 650.
  • Participate in quality assurance reviews related to inspection and inventory data.

National Bridge Inspection standards (NBIS) Compliance

  • Maintain the bridge inventory database in accordance with the Specifications for the National Bridge Inventory (SNBI)
  • Add new structures to the inventory database. Ensure all required documents are submitted including plans shop drawings load rating model and hydraulic report.
  • Remove and archive obsolete structures from the inventory as needed.
  • Use filtering and database management techniques to ensure data quality and consistency.

Bridge Preservation

  • Develop update and maintain bridge preservation guidelines and standards
  • Research emerging preservation technologies and methods.
  • Coordinate with Maintenance Division and Districts to promote best practices for routine bridge maintenance and assist in maintaining the bridge maintenance form
  • Research and coordinate Nondestructive Testing (NDT) activities to assist with inspection and planning bridge projects

    Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in civil engineering construction or construction management and
  • Four years of professional-level engineering work experience and
  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering exam as specified by the Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors and
  • Requires a class D drivers license for travel to bridge onsite.
  • Transportation Engineer II:

  • Bachelors degree in civil engineering construction or construction management and
  • Two years of professional-level engineering work experience and
  • Must have passed or have the ability to pass the Fundamentals of Engineering exam as specified by the Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors within six months of employment.
  • Requires a class D drivers license for travel to bridges onsite.
  • Transportation Engineer I:

  • Bachelors degree in civil engineering construction or construction management and
  • Requires a class D drivers license for travel to bridges onsite.
  • * Structural and transportation are a subgroup to civil engineering
