Job Description

Shenandoah Universitys Department of Spiritual Life is accepting applications for an Interfaith and Engagement Coordinator. This is a part-time non benefited position located on our main campus in Winchester Virginia.

The Interfaith and Engagement Coordinator fosters an inclusive spiritual and interfaith environment that supports students holistic wellbeing identity development and sense of belonging. This role provides compassionate care promotes religious literacy and interfaith dialogue and cultivates spaces for reflection resilience and community connection. Reporting to the University Chaplain the Chaplain helps guide institutional awareness of religious and spiritual needs contributing to a culturally responsive spiritually grounded and relationship-driven campus climate. This is a 12-month 20 hours a week non-benefited position.

Interfaith Engagement & Religious Literacy (25%)

  • Design facilitate and promote inclusive programming that fosters interfaith dialogue and service spiritual development and ethical reflection.
  • Plan implement and assess services and activities for students faculty and staff of all religious secular and spiritual identities.
  • Maintain and publish an interfaith calendar of observances and advise campus partners on respectful and inclusive practices.
  • Write for the review of the Chaplain campus-wide emails that inform all but especially faculty and supervisors of other employees of considerations that may be needed due to a religious holiday.

Student Support & Advocacy (50%)

  • Be present in the Office of Spiritual Life an average of 15 hours per week during regular 9am - 5pm business hours.
  • Support student religious and spiritual organizations and affinity groups through mentorship advising and advocacy.
  • Form and foster a Spiritual Life Council on which all RSSOs are represented.
  • Partner with faculty and campus leadership to assist students seeking academic accommodations related to religious observance.
  • Help students build connections with off-campus worship spaces or communities aligned with their traditions or beliefs.
  • Staff an average of one evening or weekend event per week.

Marketing and Engagement (25%)

  • Coordinate marketing and promotion for the Office of Spiritual Life through social media.
  • In cooperation with OMC work with the SLPC&AC to promote events through their channels (Sun-e events calendar) and maintain the SL website.
  • Participate in student recruitment and outreach events such as Open House First Year Admitted Day New Student Orientation and Baccalaureate.

Required Skills

  • Competency in and willingness to learn about all kinds of diversity inclusion and equity especially as they relate to religious secular and spiritual identities (RSSIs)
  • Excellent time management administrative and organizational skills
  • Equipped to prepare students for the growing religious diversity in our local and global communities
  • Strong leadership communication interpersonal skills
  • Attention to detail and ability to function while handling multiple tasks
  • The ability to use sound judgment and physically lead student groups with little supervision
  • Competency in helping persons of all ages explore vocation and moral/ethical issues especially college students in their diverse developmental and experiential stages
  • Proficiency in or willingness to learn computer skills for platforms such as Google and Microsoft
  • Physical dexterity and fitness level necessary to lead mission trips and outreach programs
  • Valid drivers license with the ability to become a university approved driver is required
  • Experience working in higher education and event/program planning are preferred
  • CPR and knowledge of first aid desired
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required; bachelors degree and/or 2 years applicable experience preferred
