Job Description

Job Responsibilities

This position is located at the SC Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) - Office of MentalHealth (OMH) Crafts-Farrow 7901FarrowRd Columbia SC 29203.

The Office of Mental Healths mission is to support the recovery of people with mental illnesses. We provide a complete array of medical and support services for children adults and families throughout South Carolina.


As the Psychologist II working under general supervision you will participate in and/or oversee treatment programming and planning for acute and extended care forensic services and direct the professional psychological services rendered to forensic patients within an inpatient setting.

Responsibilities for thePsychologist II:
  • Participate in and/or direct multidisciplinary treatment planning for assigned patients at Bryan Forensics. Performs or participates in admission evaluations/assessments as assigned. Supports forensic discharge planning as directed.
  • Provide psychological assessment and consultation services to support forensic treatment needs to include diagnostic clarification malingering violence risk assessment etc. Develops behavioral intervention plans for patients.
  • Provide individual and group therapy services for Bryan Forensics patients to include competency restoration services.
  • Provide training consultation and clinical oversight to psychology and/or counseling interns.
  • Provide clinical oversight and consultation to the BPH Forensic crisis team (identified counselors/social workers) implementing evidence-based treatment strategies to reduce incidents of patient aggression.
  • Provide training and ongoing consultation for other clinical staff in evidence-based interventions.
  • Perform social security disability evaluations to support discharge platforms as directed.
  • Provide age-specific and culturally competent service to clients and comply with DMH and Bryan Hospital policies and procedures.
  • Assist with Forensic Diversion initiatives as assigned including consultation with attorneys competency to stand trial screening and travel to local jails for assessment or intervention with individuals who may be eligible for forensic diversion.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

Minimum and Additional Requirements

  • A doctorate in applied psychology from an accredited college or university and experience in the practice of applied psychology.

Additional Requirements

  • Must be licensed or license eligible as a clinical psychologist in South Carolina. Licensure required within the first year of employment.
  • Ability to lift up to fifty (50)pounds walk reach pull push stoop bend climb stairs and move from one care area/building to another.
  • Ability to tolerate noise level unusual patient behaviors and circulative in-patient areas

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates who have completed forensic psychology internship or postdoctoral fellowship.
Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish (or another language) are a plus.

Additional Comments

Post hire employees must:

  • Possess valid drivers license.
  • Have manual dexterity.
  • Have knowledge of nursing procedures personal hygiene basic health and safety practices basic human anatomy.
  • Have the ability to perform MANDT and emergency care during emergencies.

*Court appearances may exceed regular work hours.
