The Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO) is responsible for coordinating daily on-site safety operations and ensuring the effective implementation of health and safety programs in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. This role requires proactively identifying mitigating and eliminating workplace hazards to promote a safe and healthy environment. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong work ethic the ability to collaborate across various levels of the organization and a proactive approach to safety management. Exceptional written verbal and presentation skills are essential along with proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word Excel Outlook PowerPoint) and experience using project management software such as . Strong multitasking time management and prioritization skills are critical to success in this role.
Responsibilities and Duties
Develop and deliver onsite training for distribution center employees on: OSHA regulations company safety policies hazard identification and prevention
Implement and monitor Safety Management System (SMS) programs to ensure compliance with all company local state and federal safety regulations applicable to warehousing and distribution operations.
Prepare reports and maintain safety documentation and records as required.
Conduct regular site inspections of warehouse areas material handling equipment racking systems loading docks and other critical areas to identify hazards and ensure compliance.
Oversee day-to-day safety operations within the distribution center ensuring all employees consistently follow established safety protocols.
Compile analyze and report data on workplace incidents near-misses and occupational injuries or illnesses including monthly safety metrics and trends.
Implement and maintain site-specific safety plans and standard operating procedures (SOPs) addressing warehouse-specific risks such as:
Forklift and powered industrial truck operations
Slips trips and falls
Material handling and ergonomics
Hazardous material storage
Conduct comprehensive: hazard assessments in warehouse operations safety audits and inspections accident investigations and root cause analyses equipment and PPE inspections.
Schedule and coordinate required safety training for all shifts ensuring employees understand safety standards and expectations.
Assist in developing and implementing hazard mitigation practices to reduce workplace risks.
Observe daily operations and enforce safe work practices throughout the facility.
Assist in safety audits and coordinate emergency response plans including evacuation drills and incident response protocols.
Participate in and help lead daily safety huddles or shift meetings with warehouse teams and serve as a point of contact for employee safety inquiries concerns and suggestions.
Evaluate hazards associated with warehouse tasks and collaborate on Job Safety Analyses (JSAs) with operations and supervisory staff.
Communicate safety meeting outcomes including action items responsibilities and timelines.
Provide guidance coaching and mentorship to all employees on health and safety topics.
Administer and manage substance abuse testing and occupational health programs for distribution center personnel.
Review existing processes and recommend improvements to enhance safety and environmental performance within the distribution center.
Stay current on industry best practices for warehouse safety regulatory updates from OSHA and other agencies emerging trends in distribution center safety management.
Skills and Qualifications
Competent with Microsoft Office products Internet and other programs.
A minimum associate or bachelors degree preferred preferably in environmental health and safety discipline or 2 years in a Safety role.
Familiarity with OSHA regulations ANSI and other applicable EHS guidelines and industry standards including OSHA 10 and OSHA 30 certifications.
Must have good written verbal communication and organizational skills
Ability to read and interpret policies programs and regulations
Able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and ensure prompt completion of tasks and assignments
Must be a self-starter including analyzing safety program needs proposing solutions and working independently.
Desirable: Completion of First Aid/CPR training and/or NRA Firearms Instructor Certification.
