Job Description

Required knowledge skills and abilities:

The required knowledge skills and abilities are acquired through an associate degree in automotive/ diesel technology or a related mechanical engineering field and 2 years of progressively responsible job-related professional experience; or 2 years Journey level mechanic experience. Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Extensive knowledge of and skills in the standard practice methods materials tool and equipment of the mechanics trade.

Knowledge of the operating principle of automotive systems including gasoline engines diesel engines electrical systems fuel systems braking systems drive trains suspension and steering systems etc. Knowledge of operating principles of small equipment such as fire pumps generators and chainsaws. Ability to diagnose problems in above systems and make effective repairs. Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing in the English language. Considerable skill in mig and tig arc and acetylene welding. Considerable skill in the use of shop equipment including drill press power hack saw lathe and other common shop equipment. Ability to make minor body repairs and paint vehicles. Ability to make proper repairs of fiberglass tanks and/or vehicle parts. Ability to maintain effective working relationship with fellow employees.

Ability to perform physically demanding duties to include standing bending kneeling and ability to push pull transport position remove or lift objects up to 100 lbs. with or without an accommodation or assistance. Must be able to operate motor vehicles at night and under all weather and road conditions. May be required to work extended hours under arduous conditions when called out in the field. Maintain physical fitness as per Department guidelines. Be available for fire suppression support duty as per Department guidelines.

Ability to make frequent decisions concerning the most cost-effective means of achieving repairs and give advice regarding retention or disposal of vehicles and other equipment. Errors in judgment can result in use of uneconomical or unfeasible repair methods leading to higher maintenance costs and poor utilization of budgeted repair fund. Poor decisions could lead to use of unsafe vehicles leading to accidents.

The ability to lift up to 100 lbs. is required in this position with or without an accommodation or assistance.

Must obtain certification(s in forklift and other heavy equipment operations ability to meet DOT requirements for loading and transferring heavy/oversized loads make fire service pump repairs handling of hazardous materials operating vehicles in excess of 26000 GVW must obtain a commercial drivers license electronic repairs and installs and other such certifications and/or training relevant to the position.

SPECIAL INFORMATION:

Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States. A valid drivers license is required with less than 12 conviction points in the most recent completed 36 months.

Work Unit Overview:

The Forestry Division headquartered in Missoula is responsible for planning and implementing forestry and fire management programs through an extensive network of staff located in field offices across the state. The Forestry Divisions primary functions include: fire protection forestry assistance good neighbor authority implementation administrative and business management and policy planning & outreach.

Job Overview:

The purpose of this position is to support design develop and maintain field equipment and apparatus. These positions perform journey level mechanical work and repairs in support of the DNRCs divisions and field staff across Montana. Positions are located throughout the state at the Equipment Development and Communications Center (EDCC) Northwestern Land Office (NWLO) Southwestern Land Office (SWLO) Central Land Office (CLO) and the Southern Land Office (SLO) and the Seedling Nursery.

Essential Functions (Major Duties or Responsibilities): These job functions are the essential duties of the position and are not all-inclusive of all the duties that may be assigned to the incumbent.

Mechanical Repair and Maintenance:
Perform journeyman level mechanical repairs and maintenance on a variety of vehicles mechanized equipment and other specialized equipment.

  • Perform preventative maintenance repairsand alterations of vehicles and equipment by examining vehicles and equipment utilizing service reports information from users and other mechanic/machinists to determine necessary design adjustments fabrication repairs or maintenance.
  • Establish service and maintenance schedules and priorities for development repairs alterations safety checks etc. to ensure all Section/Area vehicles equipment and machinery are maintained in a safe and appropriate manner this includes routine maintenance such as changing oil checking batteries and lubricating vehicles equipment and machinery.
  • Inspect testand troubleshoot defective vehicles equipment and machinery to diagnose malfunctions before or after repair or assembly using engine diagnostic equipment such as computerized test equipment and calibration devices.
  • Dismantle and reassemble vehicles machinery and equipment using hoists and hand tools.
  • Weld and fabricate needed parts using lathes grinders welders plasma and oxy/acetylene cutters.
  • Rebuild gas or diesel engines.
  • Recondition and replace parts pistons bearings gears and valves.
  • Repair rewire and troubleshoot electrical systems.
  • Repair body damage to vehicles and equipment and prime and paint as needed.
  • Research order and maintain parts inventory for services and repairs.
  • Maintain recordsof development alterations maintenance preventive maintenance and service records to track maintenance activities and replacement schedules and makes recommendations concerning retention of vehicles and equipment.
  • May travel to other areas of the State to assist in field maintenance and inspection of vehicles machinery or equipment or render emergency vehicle aid.

Painting and Specific Functions:

  • Perform painting tasks for various fire vehicles and apparatuses and ensures accuracy with regard to mixing ratios application procedures and techniques and drying time.
  • Performs proper management of product to ensure efficient use of materials and resources.
  • Performs welding and fabrication tasks to repair steel and aluminum panels.
  • Utilizes specialized tools including stud guns plastic welders heat drying lamps and spot welders to perform painting tasks to perform painting functions and tasks.
  • Adheres to emergency response guidelines when performing painting specific duties.
  • Adheres to best practices with hazardous materials handling.
