The Newborn Screening (NBS) Unit of the NC State Laboratory of Public Health is currently accepting applications for a Medical Laboratory Technologist II position. The primary purpose of the NBS Unit is to provide timely and accurate testing to identify potentially life-threatening conditions in babies born in North Carolina.
Successful candidates in this position will:- Perform testing on all newborns to detect Fatty Acid Oxidation Disorders Amino Acid Disorders Organic Acid Disorders and Lysosomal Storage Disorders using dried blood spot specimens derived from a heelstick.
- Assist in the evaluation validation and implementation of new methodologies to detect and characterize disorders that require early intervention to improve patient outcomes
- Will assist the General Supervisor and the Unit Manager in developing maintaining and updating standard operating procedures utilized in the laboratory.
Work for this position involves direct use of semi- and automated instrumentation pipetting and extensive use of computers and computer-driven instrumentation. Candidates are required to perform hands-on maintenance and troubleshooting of instrumentation. Work involves use of automatic blood spot punches data interpretation and application of comprehensive quality assurance protocols and activities.

The State Laboratory of Public Health (SLPH) we provide medical and environmental laboratory services such as testing consultation and training to public and private health provider organizations responsible for the promotion protection and assurance of the health of North Carolina citizens. SLPH serves the entire state as a reference laboratory for difficult unusual or otherwise unavailable laboratory procedures and assist in the development evaluation and standardization of medical and environmental laboratory testing procedures. We provide training and consultation to improve and assure quality services in other laboratories and certify milk and water laboratories and milk analysts. Qualified applicants must possess and application must clearly reflect work experience that demonstrates the following:- Employees in this position must be capable of meeting the Federal CLIA 88 personnel requirements for Testing Personnel in a laboratory performing high complexity testing. Applicants must provide copies of their transcript(s) and/or certification(s) to be considered for the position.
- Knowledge of and experience with analytical chemistry equipment including troubleshooting maintaining operating highly complex instrumentation.
- Proven experience with clinical laboratory procedures and processes handling potentially infectious materials and the safety aspects associated with clinical laboratory testing.
- Working knowledge of the components of a Quality Assurance program and demonstrated skill in monitoring quality controls daily performing complex data analysis and preparing report to demonstrate validity of laboratory methods.
Management Preferences:- Experience working in a clinical laboratory
- Experience working with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS).
- Demonstrated experience in analytical troubleshooting skills and adequate maintenance of laboratory equipment.
Physical Requirements:- Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Qualified applicants must possess and application must clearly reflect work experience that demonstrates the following:
Bachelors degree in medical laboratory technology chemistry or a biological science from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in a medical laboratory in the assigned area
OR
Associates degree in medical technology from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of medical laboratory experience
OR
Completion of a certified laboratory assistant course in medical technology or a comparable course from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of medical laboratory experience
OR
