The Department of Agriculture Conservation and Forestry is recruiting to fill the position of Forester II in Farmington Maine.

BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: The Forester II is primarily responsible for the marketing and sale of timber from the Bureau of Parks Eastern and Western Region Public Reserved Lands. Working with Regional Managers a dozen foresters contractors and mills timber sales are planned sold and harvested in close coordination. More than 500000 acres of forest supply 50000-100000 cords of wood for sale each year depending on markets.

This is professional services and scientific work involving the implementation of a statewide forestry program or managing components of multiple-use land resource management. Work includes land use and environmental planning on state public lands timber sale market development technology evaluation and state forester training. This classification is distinguished from the Forester I level in that the Forester II is responsible for decision making in the method of contracting for the harvesting of wood the sale of forest products and assisting the Regional Manager with contracting for timber harvest and road contracts. Supervision may be exercised over lower-level Foresters crews and/or clerical/technical personnel. Work is performed with the expectation of teamwork but under limited supervision.

TYPICAL DUTIES:

• Promotes and encourages all phases of forest resource management to carry out a region-wide program.
• Examines forest stands collects data and develops/uses management plans for the most appropriate use of state lands.
• Issues timber sale offerings and evaluates bids to receive the best overall value.
• Prepares and manages grant requests for recreation wildlife and forestry projects.
• Estimates volume of trees and selects trees to be cut; locates purchasers informs management of costs involved to assist management in harvest operation and marketing decisions.
• Evaluates and analyzes timber sales for contracting and recommends/determines safe strategy based on stumpage sales and contracts for logging service.
• Develops and plans for recreational facility needs and uses on specific public land units.
• Assists with the development of policies and plans to meet Bureau goals and objectives.
• Confers and coordinates activities with other State Federal and local agencies to administer programs and formulate policies for forest land management on state land use.
• Writes reports/provides input on forest management wildlife and recreation plans and programs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelors Degree in Forestry or related field and four (4) years field experience involving inspection and supervision of harvesting operations surveying cruising timber making and general forest management planning. Equivalent related experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.

LICENSING/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: (These must be met by all employees prior to attaining permanent status in this class): Licensed as a Registered Professional Forester from the Maine State Board of Registration for Professional Foresters.

Preference will be given to candidates with previous experience marketing forest products.
