Job Description

Duties will include but are not limited to

  • Conduct Concert Choir and Chamber Choir and other vocal ensembles as assigned.
  • Coordinate and direct all aspects of the choral music program including teachingundergraduate and graduate courses in Choral Literature Advanced Choral Conductingand Advanced Choral Techniques as determined by the needs of the choral program.
  • Collaborate with applied voice and music education faculty in the maintenance anddevelopment of curriculum to fulfill NASM standards for all vocal students in the School ofMusic.
  • Actively engage in recruiting and retention of quality undergraduate and graduate studentson campus and across the state and region.
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with public and private school choral programsand community choral organizations in the state and region.
  • Additional duties will be commensurate with the candidates qualifications and the needs ofthe School of Music.

The School of Music at the University of Akron ( invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor Director of Choral Studies position starting in August 2025.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master of Music in Choral Conducting or closely related field of study.
  • Two (2) years of choral conducting experience at the university or secondary level or commensurate experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Evidence of outstanding professional experience as a choral conductor and educator.
  • Evidence of competency in vocal pedagogy keyboard skills and musicianship necessary tosupport students vocal and musical development.
  • Evidence of successful recruiting and retention of undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Evidence of collaboration and collegiality within a faculty environment.
  • Evidence of successful work with public and/or private public school choral programs anda positive rapport with the music community.
  • Evidence of professional development through involvement in professional conferencesincluding state and/or national music education associations.

The School of Music offers a comprehensive music program to nearly 200 majors at the bachelors and masters levels and is an accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music.
