Job Description

Director of Health and Wellness GRADE 16

BARGAINING UNIT: Non-bargaining FLSA: EXEMPT

BASIC FUNCTION

Provide university-wide leadership oversight coordination and evaluation of all programs activities and operations of student health and wellness services including clinical practice mental health/counseling online services and wellness education. Coordinate health services activities with other departments/divisions and outside agencies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Create implement and evaluate activities and operations for student health and wellness
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement to ensure that Health & Wellness services and programs through the University are equitable inclusive consistent and accessible to all.
  • Consult as needed in emergency or crisis situations providing relevant expertise and guidance
  • Review and analyze Health and Wellness center data in consult with the Dean of Students to make research informed decisions about departmental services and resource requests
  • Request manage and maintain budget for health and
  • Exercise full supervisory authority over functional area associate and assistant directors and other staff as appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with local health and wellness service
  • Develop and maintain system for secure accurate recordkeeping that is in compliance with state and federal policy; state and federal reporting; and campus wide statistics.
  • Work with various campus constituents to develop and offer training programs to address the specific needs of various university departments.
  • Advise the Dean of Students on health and wellness issues; review and draft appropriate wellness center and university-wide health policies and procedures.
  • Assist with the development and coordination of public health protocols and emergency preparedness plans.
  • Oversee collection of campus health data including the American College Health Association National College Health Assessment survey.
  • Collaborate with other departments of the University and participate in appropriate interdepartmental committees and task forces.

  • Serve as a liaison and resource for the University community on health and wellness
  • Collaborate with faculty to provide hands-on opportunities for students to pursue academic projects research or initiatives related to health and wellness.
  • Demonstrate inclusivity and provide excellent customer service in all modalities including in-person telephone e-mail video call live chat texting and the like.
  • Keep abreast of current developments in clinical health mental health counseling and wellness education through involvement with professional organizations and communities such as ACHA NECHA and NEHEN.
  • Facilitate offering of community-based services such as HIV testing depression and anxiety screening and Planned Parenthood consultation days.
  • Assist with difficult or unusual tasks resolve problems and provide other needed support including with students staff faculty families and external stakeholders.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

Direct supervision of Associate Director of Health and Wellness and other service area staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Masters degree in appropriate discipline plus five or more years of relevant progressive experience in health and wellness administration or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired. Appropriate license to supervise provide and/or direct counseling services.

Valid drivers license and willingness to obtain a VSC fleet license.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Masters degree in appropriate discipline with ten or more years relevant experience.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES

Knowledge:

  • Understanding of the educational goals and objectives of Vermont State University including attention to accessibility and diversity equity and inclusion.
  • Understanding of the psychological and cultural characteristics of economically and educationally disadvantaged students particularly in a rural setting.
  • Awareness of developmental holistic and proactive approaches to student
  • Experience making data-informed

SKILLS:

  • Excellent interpersonal supervisory and communication skills.
  • Able to meet students where they are ensure they feel listened to and that they are comfortable working with advisor to navigate challenges and concerns as they come up.

  • Proven record of accountability and follow-through with the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Experience with leading managing and embracing change in various ways programmatically organizationally and with students and staff.

Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to positively influence student skill development such as communication skills leadership skills academic skills technical skills non-cognitive or soft skills and social skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster student development in the attainment of student success goals such as academic purpose sense of belonging/identity agency career readiness civic readiness access & equity.
  • Demonstrated positive attitude regarding Vermont State University and a desire to improve student outcomes including attention to diversity equity and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated ability to support a diverse community and promote diverse perspectives and cultures in an inclusive environment.
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals within the University and capacity to work as part of a team to collaborate and choose student success.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with college personnel as well as families/guardians and external resources in carrying out the various coordination liaison and advocacy aspects of the job.
  • Ability to work weekends and evenings to provide student support outside of normal business hours.
