Position Info:

TITLE: Band Assistant
REPORTS TO: MHS Assistant Principal
Job Summary:
The Marching Band Assistant will work closely with the Marching Band Director to support all aspects of the high school marching band program. This includes assisting with instruction logistics student supervision and general program operations to ensure a positive and productive experience for all band members. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in the marching arts including writing drill and a passion for working with high school students.
Key Responsibilities:
- Instructional Support:
- Assist the Band Director with teaching marching techniques and drill execution.
- Provide individualized and small-group instruction to students on their instruments and marching skills.
- Help rehearse and refine musical selections and drill formations.
- Demonstrate proper posture instrument holding and marching form.
- Logistical & Operational Support:
- Assist with the organization and distribution of music and drill charts including writing the drill.
- Help set up and break down the rehearsal area.
- Student Supervision & Mentorship:
- Supervise students during rehearsals
- Promote a positive and disciplined learning environment.
- Act as a positive role model and mentor for band members.
- Ensure student safety and adherence to school and band policies.
- Performance & Event Support:
- Assist with preparations for performances football games parades and other events.
- Help with staging and transitions during performances.
- Contribute to the overall success and positive representation of the marching band program.
- Communication & Collaboration:
- Communicate effectively and professionally with the Band Director students parents and school staff.
- Collaborate with the Band Director on program development and problem-solving..
Qualifications:
- Proficiency on a marching band instrument (e.g. brass woodwind percussion) strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of marching band fundamentals drill (being able to write drill is preferred)
- Ability to work effectively with high school-aged students.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to take initiative and work independently under the direction of the Band Director.
- CPR/First Aid certification a plus.
- Must be able to pass a background check.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand walk and move for extended periods in various weather conditions.
- Ability to lift and carry musical instruments and equipment (up to 25-50 lbs).
- Ability to demonstrate marching techniques and movements.
Work Schedule:
- Part-time variable hours including evenings and weekends during the marching band season (typically late summer through fall).
- Attendance at band camp 8/18-8/22 is required. football games and performances is expected as well as Monday and Thursday evening practice in September and October.

EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS
This position is represented by Monroe Education Association collective bargaining unit. The position ofband assistantwill work a schedule determined by the band needs. Salary and benefits as determined by the current collective bargaining agreement. Coaching salaries vary depending on paid school district experience.
