About IESO

The Independent Electricity System Operator or IESO is a government agency in Ontario responsible for managing the provinces electricity system. It ensures that supply and demand for electricity are balanced in real time and that the power grid operates reliably and efficiently. The IESO also runs Ontarios electricity market where electricity is bought and sold and helps plan for the provinces long-term energy needs. This includes forecasting electricity demand

acquiring new energy resources and integrating renewable energy and emerging technologies into the grid. The organization works with a wide range of stakeholders including utilities energy companies municipalities and Indigenous communities to support a reliable sustainable and affordable electricity system. The IESO is headquartered in Toronto and plays a key role in shaping Ontarios energy future.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supporting the design development procurement and commissioning of electricity generation resources including renewables (solar wind hydro) storage systems and conventional plants.
  • Conducting technical and commercial evaluations such as performance modeling cost estimation financial pro-forma development and contract negotiations.
  • Managing procurement processes and program frameworkscompetitive bids auctions RFPs standard offersand administering contracts for generation and ancillary services.
  • Engaging with multiple stakeholdersinternal planning legal market Indigenous affairs external developers government bodiesto guide project development and regulatory compliance.
  • Overseeing project teams external consultants project schedules and budgets to ensure timely delivery and quality standards.
  • Preparing detailed reports presentations and recommendations on market rules procurement outcomes policy and system adequacysupporting strategic energy system planning.

Qualifications and Skills Required

  • Education and experience typically include a university degree in engineering economics or business
  • 610 years in electricity generation market systems procurement or power system planning within Ontarios utility sector (including renewable and conventional sources)
  • Some experience with wholesale market operations energy procurement processes system planning or utility-scale project development
  • Possess familiarity with Ontarios energy policy regulatory environment and the roles of key institutions like the IESO OPG and the Ontario Energy Board
