Job Description

Gillian K. Hadfield is an AI researcher focused on the technical and policy challenge of ensuring that AI is built in safe and aligned ways that promote human well-being across the globe. She has recently joined Johns Hopkins University where she is the Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of AI Alignment and Governance in the School of Government and Policy and of the Department of Computer Science at the Whiting School of Engineering. Hadfield is also a Canada CIFAR AI Chair at the Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence and a Schmidt Sciences AI2050 Senior Fellow. Hadfields research is focused on innovative design for legal and regulatory systems for AI and other complex global technologies; computational models of human normative systems; and working with machine learning researchers to build ML systems that understand and respond to human norms. She is known globally for her work on AI alignment governance and safety. To support translating this work she is seeking a skilled Communications Associate.


The primary purpose of this role is to develop and implement multi-channel outreach strategies that communicate research advances to a broad audience of stakeholders. The goal will be to identify key stakeholders and grow a target audience in AI safety alignment and governance; to promote Professor Hadfields research and other related research through social media platforms blog posts and other promotional materials as well as by drafting policy briefs white papers and op-eds. The role will require maintaining a working knowledge of news and issues relating to AI policy alignment and safety and ensuring content is addressing emerging issues.


This position will require interaction with external media stakeholders with interest in disseminating Professor Hadfields work (e.g. news outlets journalists podcast hosts/producers communications staff from external AI organizations).

General Responsibilities

Design and lead the communication efforts of the division department or center overseeing communications and marketing strategies and tactics in support of the appropriate strategic priorities. This person will develop a communications plan for the center or departments strategic plan relevant reports events memos and websites.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Serve as communications lead for the division department or center.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy to support the center or department and its strategic priorities.
  • Plan create oversee and edit communications strategies aimed at keeping faculty staff and students informed about important initiatives goals and events.
  • Follow established university branding standards in all communications.
  • Liaise with members of the center or department communications team.
  • Write clear and effective content.
  • Pivot writing styles based on the format message audience and purpose.
  • Lead effort to develop a cohesive internal communications strategy that builds community and positions the school as a vital part of the university.
  • Develop and maintain an internal communications calendar ensuring that communications activities are coordinated.
  • Manage all print and digital collateral.
  • Curate content from websites social media and news media to amplify the strategic plan across multiple platforms.
  • Advise and work with the communications team to write remarks and messages for leadership.
  • Edit content and manage editors for a number of internal websites and SharePoint sites.
  • Hire and manage external vendors as needed.
  • Interact with communications experts across the university on various issues and best practices.
  • Execute strategies for cross-divisional communications efforts with other divisional communications offices.
  • Ensure consistent use of university and center or departments brand standards across all projects.
  • Perform other related duties as requested.


Additional Duties & Responsibilities for This Role

  • Create and implement comprehensive communication strategies to promote Professor Hadfields research on AI safety alignment and governance.
  • Identify and engage with key stakeholders to grow and target the audience effectively.
  • Produce and manage high-quality content for various platforms including social media blogs policy briefs white papers and op-eds.
  • Distill complex research findings into clear engaging and accessible language for diverse audiences.
  • Build and maintain relationships with stakeholders in AI safety alignment and governance.
  • Translate complex technical information into understandable content for non-experts while preserving the integrity of the research.
  • Promote Professor Hadfields research and related projects through the strategic use of social media and other promotional channels.
  • Work closely with her research team to ensure alignment of communication strategies with research goals.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of communication strategies and activities.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelors Degree in a related field.
  • Five years of related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond HS Diploma/Graduation Equivalent to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced Degree in AI policy public policy computer science law or science communication.
  • Experience collaborating with think tanks nonprofits or government agencies.
  • Experience developing and executing communication strategies.
  • Experience building relationships and placing content with major media outlets
  • Strong project management skills to manage deadlines and stakeholders.


    Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications

      • Certification in AI governance data science or technology ethics.
      • Demonstrated knowledge in AI policy AI safety and other related fields

      • Familiarity with AI frameworks the AI Bill of Rights OECD AI Principles or NIST AI Risk Management Frameworks machine learning principles or technical concepts.

      • Experience creating content for a variety of platforms spanning written and visual content.
      • Experience developing and implementing content strategy across multiple channels.

      • Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft applications such as Word PowerPoint Excel Teams and SharePoint.
      • Strong technical skills and familiarity with Microsoft and Google Suite various social media platforms and communications tools such as WordPress and Mailchimp or their equivalent.
