SUMMARY
Under general supervision to operate a motor sweeper used in street and gutter cleaning and to perform minor servicing to the sweeper. Provide assistance to other divisions by informing them of potential problems observed in the field.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Operate a motorized sweeper to sweep streets and gutters; select effective and efficient method to cover assigned route; adjust gutter and pickup brooms to effectively sweep streets and gutters; dump hopper when full; drive between collection points and transfer sites.
- Assist in trash and debris control activities such as picking up litter and other street and gutter maintenance activities as required or when weather does not permit sweeping operations.
- Perform general servicing including cleaning of motor sweeper checking for broom and chain wear and replacing brooms report mechanical or other equipment problems.
- Inspect and review condition of sweeper before daily route begins which includes but not limited too; checking oil and water levels brakes and lights tire wear and air pressure; wash clean and perform maintenance to sweeper.
- Maintain records and logs.
- Observe and report potential problems such as: graffiti traffic hazards abandoned vehicles holes in roadways signs down lights out or unusual road surface conditions.
- Observe and obey all traffic laws ensure traffic is safely rerouted while in operation; stay aware of potential conditions that could change and present dangerous pedestrian situations poor vehicle operation etc.
- Operate a 10-wheel dump truck that includes pre-trips and daily logs; haul materials such as asphalt road base topsoil and large equipment to and from job sites; operate 10-wheel dump salter and plow for snow removal activity.
- Perform semi-skilled and skilled manual work to construct and/or in the maintenance and repair of manholes and storm drain grates; operate pneumatic tools power tools and other miscellaneous hand tools.
- Remove and replace road surface material and debris load transport and unload gravel dirt garbage.
- Clean catch basins and gutters.
- Assist other crews in various divisions with the restoration of construction sites and/or road related projects.
- Place traffic control and warning signs; serve as a flagger.
- Operate tools equipment and vehicles; operate heavy equipment including front-end loader backhoe tandem axle dump truck dozer skid steer concrete saw and forklift.
- Perform preventative maintenance procedures and minor maintenance and adjustments on equipment used.
- Assist the Streets Division in snow removal on an as needed basis.
- Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: High school diploma or GED.
Experience: One year of experience in heavy equipment driving.
Certifications/Licenses:
- Valid Utah Drivers License
- Possession of or ability to obtain a Utah commercial drivers license within 1 year of employment in the position.
- Possession of or ability to obtain Traffic Control Flagger Forklift and Trench Shoring certificates within 6 months of employment (training typically provided by City). Director may grant extension if training isnt available during 6-month
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
- Principles methods and techniques of equipment operation.
- Uses purposes and operational characteristics of tools and equipment used in street sweeping including light and moderately heavy motorized equipment.
- Occupational hazards and necessary precautions applicable to assigned work.
- Basic practices and procedures used in vehicle maintenance.
- Street names and locations.
- Safe driving principles and practices.
Skill with:
- Operating a wide variety of equipment and tools used in street sweeping including street sweeper backhoe snowplow bobtail and 10-wheel dump truck front end loader skid steer forklift roller and air compressor.
- Performing manual labor for extended periods of time.
- Operating a motor vehicle and equipment for extended periods of time safely.
Ability to:
- Interpret and apply the policies procedures laws codes and regulations pertaining to street sweeping programs and functions.
- Perform routine maintenance on equipment used in street sweeping.
- Work unconventional hours and be subject to 24-hour call out as required for the Citys snow removal program or emergency operations.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
- Establish maintain and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Ability to sit stand walk kneel crouch stoop squat crawl twist climb push pull and lift up to 50 lbs. and wear protective apparel; exposure to heat noise outdoors vibration confining workspace chemicals explosive materials mechanical hazards electrical hazards and traffic hazards; ability to travel to different sites and locations; availability for on-call stand-by and emergency call. Constant exposure to disagreeable elements such as extreme heat cold dampness fumes noise dust airborne particles and grease. Also exposure to vehicular traffic while working in the public roadway.
