This position is located in Wilson NC and has a maximum recruitment range of $64000.


Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf is one of two independent residential schools for the deaf in North Carolina that is dedicated to providing an appropriate environment in which a hearing-impaired child can develop to his/her maximum potential in all areas: academic vocational communication social emotional and Independent Living skills. ENCSD serves Kindergarten 12th grade serving 54 counties in Eastern North Carolina. The Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf is a residential school for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing operating within a regular academic year Sunday afternoon through Friday 5:00 P.M; currently serving approximately 85 students on campus.

The major purpose of this position is to provide clerical/secretarial services to the School Superintendent. This position is responsible for managing the Superintendents calendar answering phone and taking messages scheduling meetings scheduling conference calls attending meetings and taking minutes to be distributed typing minutes and correspondence filing and keeping notebooks on important information for easy access completing travel authorization forms & reimbursement forms scheduling use of state vehicle for the Superintendent. This position will also supervise the school receptionist position.

This position works Monday through Friday 8:00 am 5:00 pm 12-month position. Flexible hours may be required as needed by the school calendar or the needs of the program or students.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Daily contact with supervisor concerning duties to be performed daily or weekly
  • Create and prioritize daily tasks and plan work schedule
  • Screens and greets visitors staff and students
  • Compiles and maintains paper work for the Superintendent
  • Schedules meetings for the Superintendent
  • Schedules meetings for staff and students to see the Superintendent
  • Make phone calls as deemed necessary
  • Takes notes/minutes at all meetings types and disseminates minutes
  • Assist with reports requested regarding school and students
  • Assist with completing job descriptions and work-plans for staff supervised by this office
  • Performs and completes other specific work projects or related duties assigned by the Superintendent
  • Composes letters or memos to staff parents outside agencies etc. when requested by the Superintendent. May be written or verbal request.
  • Developed and maintains Organization Chart of staff
  • Proofreads and re-words documents as needed
  • Maintains files by subject and reorganization of files as necessary
  • Maintains in-coming and out-going mail opening dating and placing in the order of importance for the Superintendent
  • Types work-orders for repairs and requisitions for purchases as needed
  • Schedules interpreters as needed
  • Coordinates overnight trips for students and staff
  • This position has daily contact with a variety of staff in most departments in this agency
  • Manage Superintendent calendar schedule meeting travel arrangements and use of state vehicle
  • Respond to general public on behalf of the Superintendent when answering the phone or answering questions from outsiders concerning the school its function and procedures and when necessary referring questions to the appropriate personnel
  • Scheduling meetings and greeting visitors
  • Back-up for switchboard as needed
  • Assist with staff development for staff

Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of related
administrative experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Management will give preference to applicants who possess skill in communicating using American Sign Language and have previous experience working in a school administrative assistant role.

The ENCSD offers students an academic setting with standards-based instruction low classroom ratios career and vocational skills development current technology and an overall accessible environment for learning through American Sign Language. A boarding program is available for enrolled students residing outside of Wilson County. The ENCSD seeks to promote both intentional and experiential learning to provide continued advancement in student academic achievement and social/emotional well-being.
