Job Description

FAMILY ENGAGEMENT SPECIALIST

Qualifications:

  1. Must comply with all employment criteria legally established by the Lee County Board of Education.
  2. Must have Bachelors degree in social work from an accredited college or university. A Masters degree in social work from an accredited college or university is preferred.
  3. Must hold a valid license issued by the Alabama State Board of Social Work Examiners (LBSW or LMSW).
  4. Experience in working with agencies who provide therapeutic interventions with children and families.
  5. Computer experience and basic computer fluency.
  6. Strong organizational skills strong oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills in working with diverse populations.
  7. Flexibility in assigned work hours.
  8. Current knowledge of the community resources and support systems available to assist students and their families.
  9. An energetic and positive approach to the rapidly evolving changes and challenges of a complex workplace.
  10. Valid Alabama driver license reliable transportation and evidence of insurance. Ability to travel between and among school sites throughout the district and to students homes as necessary.
  11. Fluency in Spanish is preferred.
  12. Must meet the suitability criteria for employment as required by the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.
  1. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Background Check Required: (HB 402 ACT 99-361 Alabama Legislature) Upon offer of employment employees will be required to submit legible fingerprints for a background review by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

REPORTS TO: Director of Federal Programs

JOB GOAL: To provide services to families to ensure their students educational success.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Applicable to All Employees:

  • Attend on a regular and predictable basis.
  • Complete assigned tasks in a safe manner and in a constant state of alertness.
  • Uphold Board policies including the anti-harassment program.
  • Work in a cooperative manner with students teachers staff supervisors and the public.
  • Work effectively and efficiently under time and productivity standards.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Become familiar with McKinny-Vento Title I and III regulations and programs.
  2. Develop and implement programs to help build a positive partnership between the home and the school including assistance for homeless low-income and English Learner (EL) families.
  3. In consultation with the Federal Programs Director and designated principals develop disseminate and implement a rotating visitation schedule for each Title I school and/or schools.
  4. Develop programs and acquire resources that will assist homeless low-income and English Learner (EL) families teachers and paraprofessional work more effectively with the scholars.
  5. Maintain appropriate records on the targeted scholars and parents.
  6. Present formal and informal reports to the Federal ProgramsDirector regarding all McKinney-Vento Title I and III initiatives.
  7. Attend meetings and conferences for continuous professional development and for application with students and parents.
  8. Assist with the development of policies and procedures for parental involvement.
  9. Arrange for parent/teacher conferences and other meetings involving homeless low-income and English Learner (EL) families in an effort for them to remain informed about their students progress and school related activities.
  10. In consultation with the Federal Programs Director assess annually the effectiveness of the parental involvement program and homeless low-income and English Learner (EL) families students progress.
  11. Adhere to the Alabama Educator Code of Ethics.
  12. Maintains professional work habits.
  13. Plans facilitates and/or participates in training as directed.
  14. Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the Student Services Director or Federal Programs Director.

The employee is occasionally required to stoop kneel crouch or crawl.

ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:

The environmental demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential responsibilities and functions of the job and are not meant to be all inclusive. Exposure to a variety of childhood and adult diseases and illnesses.

Occasional exposure to a variety of weather conditions. Exposure to heated/air conditioned and ventilated facilities. Exposure to a building in which a variety of chemical substances are used for cleaning instruction and/or operation of equipment. Function in a workplace that is usually moderately quiet but that can be noisy at times.

MENTAL FUNCTIONS:While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to compare analyze communicate coordinate instruct compute synthesize evaluate use interpersonal skills and compile. Occasionally required to copy and negotiate.

EMPLOYMENT: This is a ten-month contract (200 days). Salary range is based on board approved salary schedule.

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Boards policy on evaluation of Certified Personnel.
