Job Description

The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair of the Department of Neuroscience.

The Perelman School of Medicine (PSOM) is the oldest and one of the finest medical schools in the United States priding itself on a long and outstanding tradition of research education and clinical service in the neurosciences. Founded in 1992 the Department of Neuroscience at the PSOM has a proud and rich combination of academic activities and service contributions with a mission to advance understanding of the nervous system through fundamental research. Today Penn Neuroscience is consistently among the nations top recipients of funding for biomedical research from the National Institutes of Health. The Departments leadership has systematically built research and educational programs that have become deeply integrated into the fabric of the PSOM the University and the community. Its distinguished faculty produce and disseminate scholarship and develop the next generation of research scientists. It provides scientific laboratory and career development training for undergraduates graduate students and post-doctoral scientists.

The Department of Neuroscience is closely aligned with the Mahoney Institute for Neurosciences (MINS) and the Penn Medicine Translational Neuroscience Center (PTNC) in addition to key partnerships with the School of Arts and Sciences Penn Engineering the Center for Dynamic Imaging of Nervous System the Penn Brain Science Center and the Chronobiology and Sleep Institute.

The Chair of the Department directs 21 full-time faculty 42 research support and administrative/professional staff and 31 trainees. The Department has a deep commitment to education with graduate students largely drawn from the Neuroscience Graduate Groups.

The Chair will provide strong vision and leadership for the Department and will lead strategic planning and implementation for its continued success. Applicants for the position of Chair must hold an MD and/or PhD degree and qualify for a faculty appointment as Associate Professor or Professor in the Standing Faculty of the PSOM at the University of Pennsylvania. Candidates should have a distinguished national/international record of research possess dynamic and inclusive leadership and have significant administrative experience. Candidates must have a clear commitment to and excellence in education including the sponsorship and mentorship of an academically diverse group of students trainees fellows and faculty. Candidates must be able to foster strong collaborations among investigators within the Department the PSOM the campus community and beyond. They must be able to articulate a compelling vision for the future of neuroscience at the PSOM the role of the Department within a highly regarded academic medical center and the broader field of neuroscience.
