Job Description

Chaplain of St. Giles Chapel

Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Community

Asheville NC


Deerfield is seeking a chaplain to join our spiritual life team providing care and support for the wellbeing of 650 residents and 350 staff. The work of the chaplain is ecumenical and inter-faith in practice and is welcoming of all who desire to be included. Deerfield is celebrating its 70th anniversary as an Episcopal retirement community and seeks to enrich the lives of those who live and work at Deerfield.


The Chaplain serves under the supervision of the Director of Spiritual Life

  • This is a full-time salaried position with the salary set and reviewed annually.
  • It is anticipated the Chaplain will concentrate regular working hours on direct pastoral contact with residents and staff. It is further anticipated that the Chaplain will also assist with Sunday morning worship services and with memorial services as needed.
  • The Chaplain will be on call (from home) for emergencies 4-5 nights per week.

Under the supervision of the Director the Chaplain will make pastoral visits to:

  • Residents and employees in the hospital.
  • Residents in their homes especially as these residents are facing illness life transitions loss and grief or other issues for which pastoral care is appropriate.
  • Employees on campus during work hours especially as these residents are facing illness life transitions loss and grief or other issues for which pastoral care is appropriate.
  • New residents and/or employees.

The Chaplain will also make routine visits to residents especially to those in our Assisted Living and Skilled Care facilities and to anyone who has requested a visit.

Qualifications and Skills

  • An undergraduate degree from an accredited college/university and a Master of Divinity or equivalent degree from an accredited theological seminary. (Equivalent educational degrees and/or ministry experience may be considered.)

  • Fully ordained (or soon to be) and currently in full connection and good standing with his/her denominational body church etc. Preferred but not required: Ordained minister in the Episcopal or Lutheran (ELCA) Church.

  • Preferred but not required: At least 12 months of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) and three to five years of pastoral ministry or other ministerial experience.

  • Chaplaincy and/or other related job experience is a plus.

  • All skills normally associated with pastoral leadership (preaching leading worship

services teaching pastoral care administrative duties etc.).

Compensation and Benefits

Deerfield offers a highly competitive compensation package for this full-time position with benefits to include excellent health plan options retirement benefits professional development as well as state-of-the art facilities. The Chaplain is encouraged to take time off for self-care and vacations. Up to 40 paid hours per year may be taken for Continuing Education and/or spiritual renewal with tuition and travel expenses to be negotiated through the Director. Paid vacation is also provided.
