Department Description:

The Department of Public Safety supports the mission and goals of the University of San Diego by providing a full range of crime prevention and crime control services to contribute to the safety and security of the campus community. Our Public Safety Officers are responsible for a wide range of activities including developing crime prevention programs taking crime and accident reports initiating investigations responding to medical and fire emergencies providing traffic control and enforcing certain local and state laws as well as rules developed by the University to address campus-related concerns.

Detailed Description:
Provides a wide range of services to the University community including crime prevention crime control parking control and furnishing aid and information to the campus community and visitors. Duties include responding to 911 emergency-style calls investigating alarms responding to crimes in progress and scenes of past crimes or incidents. The public safety officer will understand the diverse and cultural aspects of the University community. The public safety officer performs duties in cooperation with the San Diego Police Department and local fire and medical services to minimize harm to victims witnesses to crimes and those responding or involved in emergency situations. Routine duties include responding to non-emergency calls for service providing information collaborating with student organizations staff faculty and students residing in campus housing to reduce crime and fear as well as investigating and preparing written reports on crime accidents and injuries.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ability to assume responsibility to think clearly and use sound judgment.

  • Ability to communicate effectively on the telephone in person and in writing.
  • Possesses strong interpersonal skills including tact diplomacy and flexibility.
  • Ability to work with diverse personalities and groups.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective work relationships with University personnel students vendors visitors and various agencies.
  • Possesses skills to organize and prioritize work as well as manage time effectively with the flexibility to adapt to changing conditions.
  • Possess knowledge of the State of Californias laws rules and regulations.
  • Ability to comply with all departmental uniform and equipment standards and knowledge in the use/care of firearms and the equipment issued by USDs Department of Public Safety.
  • Possess skill in the use of specific equipment and tools as identified under Tools and Equipment Used.
  • Provide motor vehicle and foot patrol of off-campus roadways walkways parking lots grounds University buildings and residential areas.
  • Provide for the protection of life and property. Observe safety hazards and report them to the proper persons for correction.
  • Make recommendations when appropriate which reduce or eliminate conditions that lend themselves to unsafe conditions or expose the University and personal property to theft and damage.
  • Conduct investigations of reported crimes and the incidents occurring within the jurisdictional boundaries of the University and submit reports regarding those investigations.
  • Work in cooperation with local law enforcement agencies to make arrests of persons suspected of committing crimes or other unlawful acts.
  • Prepare cases for prosecution and when necessary testify in court.
  • Provide escorts of University employees transferring large sums of money to alternate campus locations.
  • Respond to requests for emergency and routine medical assistance as required.
  • Determine medical needs and administer first aid as necessary and summon additional medical assistance as required.
  • Give directions and provide assistance to students staff faculty and visitors as requested and when appropriate.
  • Respond to and give service to all members of the campus community and campus visitors.
  • Ability to be contacted at a working home telephone or by cellular phone.
  • Provide dispatch and alarm monitoring coverage when requested.
  • Enforce parking regulations in all areas of University property as required.
  • Perform other duties and functions as appropriate to the job classification.

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be able to work flexible hours including weekends evenings and holidays; available for on-call assignments and overtime.
  • Must provide personally owned Glock 1719 or similar gun model.

Background check: Successful completion of a pre-employment background check.

Degree Verification Requirement: Persons offered employment in this position will be required to provide official education transcripts for degree verification purposes.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent GED.
  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • Must undergo a background investigation medical and psychological screenings.
  • Ability to work all shifts weekends and holidays and available for on-call assignments and overtime.
  • Ability to work with varying levels of supervision.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure while maintaining a professional stance and remaining calm in emergency and/or tense situations.
  • Ability to communicate in a helpful effective and professional manner in person by telephone and by two-way radio.
  • Ability and knowledge in the use/care of all firearms and the equipment issued by USDs Department of Public Safety.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact with a diverse population including faculty staff students and visitors.
  • Have a valid California drivers license.
  • Have a valid CPR and First Aid cards.
  • Have guard registration and firearm permits issued by the State of California.
  • Provide a clean driving history printout
  • Provide job related training certificates
  • Prefer 832 class or P.O.S.T. certification or ability to qualify under these provisions.
  • Must have full range of hearing as duties involve listening to phone and radio transmissions and for audible fire and intrusion alarms.
  • Eyesight must be correctable to 20/30 with normal color vision.
  • Demonstrated written and oral communication skills.
