Duties and Responsibilities

academic advising to undergraduate students within the College of Natural Sciences.

2. Evaluate and monitor student academic progress and the impact on achievement of goals including progress checks graduation checks and taking appropriate institutional action.

3. Provide input in the development of academic advising and student services across the college and carry out assigned tasks in the implementation and management of these services.

4. Coordinate retention-centered programs for undergraduate students including arranging for experts and other campus resources to speak about recruitment orientation mentorship career dev graduation and alumni relations.

5. Plan and implement student community building events.

6. Participate in on-campus trainings and advising-related topics.

7. Travel to conferences annually if budget allows.

8. Coordinate student recruitment at college and career fairs around the Island; possible evening weekend and off-campus assignments to accommodate prospective student needs.

9. In conjunction with the Colleges Departments coordinate the maintenance of accurate four-year degree plans and program sheets for undergraduate majors within the College of Natural Sciences.

10. Provide departmental authorization for students in selected courses for registration.

11. Establish and maintain electronic academic records for each student.

12. Establish and maintain regular communication with student majors via email and other means.

13. Facilitate undergraduate student access to research scholarship internships employment and advanced study opportunities.

14. Develop assessments to determine the efficacy of advising activities.

15. Participate in the supervision of student workers and peer advisors.

16. Review and update the Colleges academic and student affairs websites pertaining to academic advising.

17. Develop and maintain printed program information documents for degree requirements student recruiting and monitoring of student progress.

18. Keeps abreast with UH curriculum changes and academic information important to undergraduate students.

19. Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

of a baccalaureate degree in an Arts and Sciences discipline or related fields and 3 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for academic counseling or advising; or equivalent education/training or experience.

2. Evidence of college/campus level student group facilitation.

3. Functional knowledge of principles practices and techniques for improving retention and graduation rates in higher education demonstrated by knowledge understanding and the ability to apply concepts terminology.

4. Functional knowledge and understanding of principles theories federal and state laws rules regulations and systems associated with higher education.

5. Demonstrated ability to recognize problems identify possible causes and resolve the full range of problems that may commonly occur in the practice of academic counseling and advising.

6. Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation write reports and procedures and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.

7. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations groups team members and individuals.

8. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.

9. Analytical critical thinking and problem-solving skills to identify and determine the appropriate level of advising or referral services for individual students.

10. Excellent written oral and interpersonal communication skills to effectively interact and communicate with diverse individuals and work as part of a team.

11. Skill in using a variety of technology resources including but not limited to: Microsoft Office products automated student information systems databases email web browsers and social media.

12. Demonstrated ability to perform complex tasks experience with independently initiating necessary action and coordinating many activities concurrently as well as establishing priorities and seeing tasks to completion.

13. Poise and good address for meeting and conferring with others.

14. Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education knowledge skills and abilities as indicated.


Desirable Qualifications

2. Experience in working with a diverse student body and knowledge of their academic needs and concerns.

3. Working knowledge of post-secondary curricula academic requirements and policy.

4. Experience maintaining confidentiality of student records and knowledge of state and federal laws governing confidentially of student records and university policy regarding privacy of information.

5. Familiarity with Banner student information system.

6. Experience in the discipline of advising retention and program development in the University setting.

7. Functional knowledge of principles practices and techniques employed in academic advising demonstrated by knowledge understanding and ability to apply concepts/terminology.

8. Working knowledge of biological sciences post-secondary curricula and the interrelationship with the physical sciences.
