Amazon Web Services (AWS) Hardware Engineering team creates compute and storage server designs for Amazons innovative web services. Our designs are industry-leading in performance frugality and operational excellence and are critical to the success of the AWS business and the more than one million customers who use AWS today. Our Hardware Engineers solve challenging technology problems and build architecturally sound high-quality server platforms and components to enable AWS to realize critical business strategies. We are seeking experienced Hardware Design Engineers to build the next generation of our cloud systems. Key job responsibilities
As a member of the Storage System Hardware engineering team you will be responsible for bringing new HDD technology to our systems & products as well as scaling how we operate our massive existing & rapidly growing fleet. You will interact with engineers across the company external vendors and work with an interdisciplinary team to execute product designs from concept to production including design development validation and the successful implementation of your work at large scale. Youll provide leadership in the application of new technologies to large scale server deployments in a continuous effort to deliver a world-class customer experience. This is a fast-paced challenging position and youll work with thought leaders in multiple technology areas. Youll have high standards for yourself and everyone you work with and youll be constantly looking for ways to improve your products performance quality and cost. A day in the life
You will own one of the largest hard drive fleets in the world. You will focus on introducing new technology and hardware into data centers qualifying firmware and maintaining the fleet.
Efforts will entail driving validation and qualification of drives firmware. Debugging system interaction issues to fix issues impacting the fleet. Managing large scale fleet analytics to determine areas of focus.
Given the size of the fleet nothing can be done manually. Script automate program and build the next generation of storage here at AWS.
About the team
System Development Engineers in AWS Hardware Engineering wear many hats. From orchestration tooling development to hardware integration to kernel driver debugging we dive deep into problems across the breadth of AWS. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of rapidly coming up to speed on new engineering disciplines making impactful decisions within that space and have experience gluing together components written by more specialized engineers to create a cohesive well-running engineering product.

- 3 years of programming with at least one modern language such as C C# Java Python Golang PowerShell Ruby experience
- 4 years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 2 years of designing or architecting (design patterns reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- 4 years of deploying and operating in a Linux/Unix environment experience
- 2 years of systems design software development operations automation and process improvement experience
- Experience leading the design build and deployment of complex and performant (reliable and scalable) software solutions in production
- 5 years of experience in HDD-related design & qualification.
- Experience with system integration and operation of HDDs.
- Experience with technical problem solving & root cause/debug
- 10 years of experience in HDD related design & qualification
- Masters degree in electrical engineering computer engineering or equivalent
- Experience working with interdisciplinary teams to execute product design from concept to production
- 10 years of experience in HDD related design & qualification
- Proficient coding scripting and debug abilities
- Expertise in server technologies such as thermal mechanical power and signal integrity.
- Experience in developing functional specifications design verification plans and functional test procedures
- Meets/exceeds Amazons leadership principles requirements for this role

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $136100/year in our lowest geographic market up to $235200/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge skills and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
