Overview:
TheGwichin Tribal Council (GTC) invites applications from qualified individualsto serve on the Board of Directors of the Gwichin Development Corporation(GDC). The GDC is a key economic development entity wholly owned by the GTCdedicated to advancing the economic interests of the Gwichin people.
Background Information:
Serving on the Board of Directors of the GDC is a uniqueopportunity to contribute to the economic empowerment and self-determination ofthe Gwichin people. As a board member you will play a pivotal role in guidingthe corporations strategic direction ensuring its financial health andupholding its mission to benefit the Gwichin communities.
Established shortly after the signing of the GwichinComprehensive Land Claim Agreement in 1992 the GDC is wholly owned by theGwichin Tribal Council (GTC). Currently headquartered in Inuvik NorthwestTerritories the GDC focuses on forming partnerships with experienced companiesinterested in the resources and opportunities within the Gwichin SettlementArea. By combining external expertise and technology with traditional knowledgeand cultural experience the GDC has successfully navigated the competitiveeconomy.
The Gwichin Settlement Region encompasses parts of theYukon and Northwest Territories including the communities of Inuvik FortMcPherson Aklavik and Tsiigehtchic. Under the Gwichin Comprehensive LandClaim Agreement the GTC holds ownership of 16264 square kilometers of land inparcels throughout the Gwichin Settlement Area and Yukon. These lands areactive with economic development projects such as the proposed Mackenzie GasPipeline Project and other oil and gas explorations. The GDC ensures that localresidents are involved in and benefit from these opportunities.
As a GDC board member you will be expected to:
Provide Strategic Oversight: Guide thecorporations direction in alignment with its mission and the broader goals ofthe GTC.
Ensure Financial Stewardship: Oversee budgetingand financial reporting to maintain organizational health and transparency.
Uphold Governance Standards: Monitor compliancewith legal and regulatory obligations while championing best practices inIndigenous and Canadian corporate governance.
Manage Risk: Identify and help mitigate keyrisks to safeguard the sustainability of the corporation.
Engage the Community: Promote GDC initiativesand maintain strong relationships with Gwichin communities and stakeholders.
Act with integrity care and diligence in thebest interests of the corporation.
Eligibility Criteria:
Ideal candidates will demonstrate:
1.Experience in corporate governance financeeconomic development or related fields;
2.Understanding of Indigenous economicdevelopment and the unique context of the Gwichin communities; and
3.Commitment to advancing the values and strategicpriorities of the GDC and GTC.

Selection Process:
All applications will be reviewed by the GTC Executive Committee comprised ofthe Chief Executive Officer Chief Financial Officer and Chief OperatingOfficer. Shortlisted candidates may be invited to participate in an interviewprocess. Appointments will be made on the basis of merit with considerationgiven to ensuring representation from each of the four Gwichin communities.
Please note that the number of appointments at this timemay be limited as the GTC is committed to respecting the autonomy of eachcommunity to determine its own approach to board representation. In some casespositions may be held open for future phases of recruitment to allow space forcommunity-driven nominations or selections. This approach reflects our ongoingcommitment to honouring the integrity and independence of Gwichinself-governance.
