Library Circulation Desk Attendant

Position Description:
Under direct supervision of the Library Director the Library Circulation Desk Attendant is primarily responsible for managing the library services desk while providing excellent customer service for library patrons.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
Opening tasks:
Log-in computers
Check outside book deposit for materials
Check-in returned materials
Shelve library materials
Prepare library facility for opening
Open student lounge and adjacent restrooms on Mondays during the academic year
Open student lounge classrooms adjacent restrooms during holidays and summer hours
Closing tasks:
Log-out computers
Secure library facility
Secure student lounge classrooms adjacent restrooms during holidays and summer hours
Set alarms
Library Services Desk tasks:
Create and maintain an organized professional and friendly environment in the library
Circulate library materials
Provide reference and research assistance
Provide library instruction
Provide reader advisory services
Assist users with computer hardware and software programs including Microsoft operating system integrated library software (Athena) online library research databases Equitrac copier accounting software and Microsoft Office
Assist users with library equipment including: digital imager/photo copier and the microfilm reader/printer
Evaluate outside patron applications file applications and assign library cards for new students and community patrons
Provide security for materials
Provide orientation for student Library Public Services Assistants
Materials maintenance:
Shelve library materials
Check carrels for library materials not in compliance with terms of use
Process new books and AV materials for circulation
Search database for titles of donated books not in collection
Mend worn materials
Shelf read collection
Inventory collection
Reserves:
Locate and retrieve materials from stacks and vertical files at professors request
Identify materials selected for reserve use
Organize reserve materials for ease of access by course number
Maintain vertical files for preservation of journal articles and other materials
Re-shelve/re-file all reserve books and materials at the end of semester
Archives:
File faculty minutes and official seminary publications
Accounting:
Maintain student accounts for copying/printing (managed by Equitrac computer program)
Collect fees for overdue materials copies and used book sales
Count cash and coins for fees and used book sales and deliver to business office
Statistics:
Maintain record of daily use of periodicals by titles
Talley daily reference book usage
Talley daily usage of stack books consulted but not checked out
Other:
Function as Library Director in his absence.
Collaborate with Library Director on decisions effecting library services
Research and investigate new and improved ways of providing services to patrons
Answer a wide variety of patron requests
Assist in building maintenance
Other duties as assigned
Desired Minimum Qualifications:
A Bachelor degree is preferred but an AA degree in library technology or equivalent is acceptable
One year work experience in a library
Ability to perform a wide variety of circulation services
Working knowledge of a theological bibliography
Ability to provide reference and research assistance in a theological library
Ability to provide library instruction in a theological library
Ability to provide reader advisory services in a theological library
Ability to perform help desk level services for computer hardware and related software programs including: Microsoft XP operating system integrated library system software (Athena) online library research databases Equitrac copier accounting software and Microsoft Office
Ability to perform help desk level services for library equipment including: digital imager/photo copier and the microfilm reader/printer
Working knowledge of MARC and Library of Congress classification system
Ability to provide excellent customer service to all library patrons
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
Accuracy and careful attention to detail
Excellent organizational and time-management skills
Ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with individuals from diverse cultures disciplines and perspectives
Desire and ability to represent WSC in a positive and professional manner and to be able to articulate the confessional beliefs of the seminary
