Role Summary

Under the supervision of the Coordinator of Communication Access the Staff Interpreter facilitates communication access by providing American sign language interpretation for Deaf and hard of hearing students faculty staff and/or visitors. Interpreting services are delivered primarily in the classroom or other university setting and in accordance with established schedules. The Staff Interpreter will assist with outreach initiatives related to Deafness and ASL interpreting and will collaborate with multiple stakeholders to ensure proper campus-wide communication access. The role also supports the administration of the departments notetaking assistance program and assists with other administrative tasks upon request.

Examples of Work Performed

  • Provide sign language interpreting and transliterating services as assigned for university classes lectures meetings and other university sponsored events/activities
  • Actively monitor student and other Deaf consumers while interpreting for comprehension and feedback
  • Use independent judgment to resolve problems and ensure proper communication access
  • Review course information to learn vocabulary technical terms concepts to be covered and the instructors teaching methods.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to ensure communication access
  • Assist with the management of the departments notetaking assistance program
  • Adhere to the NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct for Sign Language Interpreters
  • Other duties as assigned

Essential Functions

  1. Applies specialized linguistic knowledge to interpret and translate written and spoken word
  2. Conducts research to clarify complex phrasing and terminology
  3. Reviews course and other related materials to prepare for specific interpretation/translation duties
  4. Meets with stakeholders to better understand interpretation needs
  5. Performs live interpretation of classes meetings or other events

Minimum Education/Experience

Education:Bachelors Degree

Experience:(3) Three Years Experience

Substitution Statement: An equivalent combination of related experience and education may be considered for this role. Substitutions of the required experience or education will be assessed on a 1:1 substitution basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Must have a Bachelors degree at least 3 years of related experience and hold current certification as an American sign language interpreter either through a MS QA (Level III) or equivalent national certification or other certification recognized by the State of Mississippi. A provisional QA Level III with the Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services Office on Deaf & Hard of Hearing (ODHH) may be acceptable with confirmation from ODHH. Must be registered or eligible for registration with ODHH within 30 days from date of hire. Proof of interpreter certification and/or registration with ODHH must be provided with the application. Physical Requirements: These physical requirements are not exhaustive and additional job-related physical requirements may be added to these by individual agencies on an as needed basis.

Corrective devices may be used to meet physical requirements.

Physical Exertion: The incumbent may be required to lift up to approximately 10 pounds.

Vision: Requirements of this job include close vision. Speaking/Hearing: Ability to give and receive information through speaking and listening.

Motor Coordination: While performing the duties of this job the incumbent is frequently required to talk and hear; and use hands to finger handle or feel. The incumbent is periodically required to sit. The incumbent is occasionally required to stand; walk; and reach with hands and arms
