PositionSummary:

The Supervisor for SimulationTechnology extends beyond a conventional IT Supervisory role offering adynamic blend of responsibilities. In addition to supervising core ITfunctions you will play a critical role in coordinating scheduling andlogistics with our operations and education teams to ensure seamless simulationevents. The scope will also include allocating and assisting with the setup ofnon-IT resources such as tables and chairs for various events as well asmanaging inventory purchasing and maintaining non-technical medical trainingequipment and consumables. This multifaceted role demands adaptabilitycollaboration and a proactive approach to support the centers diverseoperational needs.

The Supervisor for Simulation Technology based in the School of MedicineTechnology Services (SOMTech) department provides strategic leadership andoperational oversight for the IT and simulation technology operations of theVCU Center for Human Simulation and Patient Safety. This role manages a team oftwo Simulation Technology Specialists (SimTechs) and one Senior IT SystemsAnalyst to ensure seamless technology support for simulation-based medicaleducation.

The supervisor collaborates closely with the Center Director SOM faculty andSOMTech colleagues to align simulation activities with the School of Medicinescurriculum VCUs mission of advancing knowledge and VCU Healths commitmentto patient care. Combining expertise in IT systems administration audiovisualsystems management and simulation technology the role drives innovation inmedical education and maintains the Centers technology leadership insimulation-based training.

The position works with the Director of Academic and Immersive Technologies tomanage technology needs including project oversight for AV/Server/IT upgradesand purchases of innovative simulation technologies. This includes consultingwith faculty and staff on simulation design programming testing and researchapplications as well as providing technical support for simulator preparationprogramming maintenance operation and repair. The supervisor establishespolicies for SimTech staff on simulator maintenance and troubleshooting whilemaintaining detailed records of these activities. In collaboration with SOMTechcolleagues the role ensures CHSPS technology policies comply with SOM and VCUstandards. The supervisor evaluates technology equipment recommends hardwareand software acquisitions and stays current on emerging educationaltechnologies to support excellence in simulation-based medical education.


CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Supervision of SIM IT Staff (Simulation Technology Specialists) (50%)

  • Ensure that direct reports provide technical and maintenance support of manikins and that all equipment is in working order.
  • Encourage staff to pursue development opportunities and training to elevate the skills needed to innovate and grow the technology operations in the center.
  • Assist in managing the Centers projects and provide technical support for simulation operations including preparation programming maintenance operation and repair of simulators (including task trainers).
  • Recruit train and manage simulation technology staff. Ensure that technology staff provide technical support for simulation operations including preparation programming maintenance operation and repair of equipment.
  • Ensure that adequate IT staffing coverage (including staggered scheduling) is enforced and implemented as necessary.
  • Ensure that simulation and IT objectives of the Center are met.
  • Establish policies for IT staff regarding regular maintenance and troubleshooting of simulators and maintaining records of such activity.

2. Supervision of SIM TechnologyOperations (20%)

  • Oversee all IT operations and associated project management for the VCU Center for Human Simulation and Patient Safety in collaboration with the Center Director establish and periodically revise Center policy related to data management and security and establish priorities for the acquisition and maintenance of instructional technologies for the Center.
  • Work closely with the Office of the Assistant Dean and PMO on budget planning and IT procurement hardware and software applications procurement and software contract negotiation.
  • Ensures that the Center maintains up to date and functional technology and policies regarding data management are enforced.
  • Ensure that simulation equipment systems and tools are compliant with VCU VCU Health or other organizational policies and procedures.

3. Backup SIM Technology Operations(10%)

  • As needed back up for SIM Tech operations; assist in set-up performing repair of simulators and task trainers and running simulations.

4. Technology Management (10%)

  • Provide 1) IT systems and server administration and 2) audiovisual systems management to support simulation technology and simulation equipment; IIS SQL DVCS DVRS A/V and backups of critical systems.
  • Provide support or consultation for: Group Policy Objects (GPOs) Active Directory (AD) VMWare file share management.
  • Ensure that policies and practices governing CHSPS technology follow VCU and SOM policies.
  • Work closely with SOMTech leadership and colleagues to ensure system backups are maintained and IT policies are reviewed annually for appropriateness and compliance.

5. User Support & Consultation(10%)

  • Provide consultation to faculty and staff on technology aspects of simulation design programming testing and research applications.
  • Promote increased use of simulation in the curriculum and technology sessions in the faculty development program.
  • Communicate technical information empathetically in plain English so that it is understandable to novice computer users
  • Communicate effectively in writing particularly for the development of documentation manuals procedures service guidelines etc.
  • Ensure success in service and client satisfaction while establishing user trust and confidence in the SOMTech brand

Qualifications

MinimumQualifications:

  • This specialized position is a blend of 1) traditional IT systems 2) audiovisual systems management to support simulation technology and simulation equipment.
  • Several years of IT supervisory experience and hands-on technical support experience required.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively schedule manage and supervise a technical team and workload.
  • General knowledge of systems and server administration technologies (such as IIS/SQL) virtualization (VMware) audiovisual systems (Routing DVRs etc.) disaster recovery (DR) practices hardware and software applications procurement and software contract negotiation.
  • Ability to work well under pressure set priorities and make critical decisions. Flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding job assignments and sensitive issues.
  • Ability to collaborate with internal and external partners among various disciplines.
  • Must have strong service orientation skills and excellent interpersonal communication skills. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must have ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize work assignments.
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect professionalism and civility with a population of faculty staff and students from various backgrounds and experiences or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in medical simulation.
  • Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist (CHSOS) certification
  • Project management and performance management experience.
  • Relevant experience in a university/hospital setting preferred.
