Job Description

The Coordinator of Research for Data Management provides oversight and membership support to develop and manage NCAA Research data collections especially those related to student-athlete academics NCAA membership sports sponsorship participation and demographics. The coordinator also maintains and updates the internal data sharing application as well as produces research reports and data visualizations on graduation rate membership sponsorship/participation and demographic trends to the NCAA membership staff governance committees policymakers external stakeholders and media.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Oversee data collections in NCAA Sports Sponsorship and Demographic (SSD) form and NCAA Graduation Rate reporting:
    • Develop and coordinate the annual enhancement processes across department in the NCAA National Office prior to portal opens for both data collections.
    • Establish strong collaborative relationship with NCAA Information Technology staff to regularly enhance both data collection infrastructures and correct random errors arising from data collection processes.
    • Oversee annual SSD data collection and annual Graduation Rate data collection from all NCAA membership across three divisions.
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for campus and conference office staff regarding data reporting and submission during data collection cycles.
    • Serve as customer service expert developing new Graduation Rate data collection.
    • Maintain professional relationship with the Federal Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) administrator to ensure NCAA Graduation Rate collection align with federal guidelines.
  • Clean and report NCAA SSD data as assigned by the Director of Research for Data Management:
    • Validate membership reported SSD data and resolve discrepancies between conference and institution reporting.
    • Validate system flags on membership requirements to ensure data accuracy based on current bylaw requirements.
    • Clean restructure and document SSD data collected from NCAA members.
    • Maintain annual updates of 100 tables on internal data sharing App once SSD cycle is completed and upload new tables upon requests.
    • Perform analyses of the SSD data and disseminate findings in various formats (e.g. PowerPoint presentations Excel sheets interactive data visualization dashboards) for NCAA staff and external audiences.
    • Provide data and graphics for use in social media and web postings.
  • Conduct ad-hoc data or policy analysis projects as assigned by the Director of Research for Data Management or Managing Director of Research:
    • Query and compile membership/sponsorship data tables and conduct appropriate data analyses for stakeholders per requests.
    • Write research summaries and generate infographics based on findings.
    • Present findings to staff committees and other groups as needed.
  • Other duties.
    • Present educational materials or data reports at various NCAA workshops or meetings.
    • Provide training support to the NCAA customer service team on annual SSD and Grad Rate data collections.
    • Coordinate efforts for NCAA data App integration.
    • Work with the NCAA Communications team in response to year-round public/media requests on SSD data.
    • Collaborate with external scholars in disseminating NCAA demographics data/reports.

Job Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent. Bachelors degree strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with large research databases required.
  • Experience working with higher education data reporting and database management required.
  • Experience in a social science research setting preferred.
  • Basic to intermediate level of SQL skills required to be able to query and analyze data from the database.
  • Skills in descriptive and inferential statistics statistical software programming (e.g. SPSS STATA or R) and database creation and management preferred.
  • Experience in designing data visualizations and graphics for data storytelling preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail required.
  • Knowledge of the NCAA its membership structure and current policy issues that can be informed through research preferred.
  • Willingness to take on a wide variety of tasks and responsibilities.
  • Ability to work well as a team member.
  • Estimated Travel Required <10%.
  • This position will be based out of the national office in Indianapolis Indiana. Current work environment is hybrid: 3 days in the office and 2 days are remote.
