Essential Duties - Responsible for teaching skills and knowledge in Spanish language instruction to secondary students utilizing curriculum designated by Newport News Public Schools and other appropriate learning activities. Duties include instructing students in citizenship and Spanish subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of Newport News Public Schools; developing lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with the divisions basic instructional philosophy and congruent with course and Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL); adapting the curriculum to provide individual small group or remedial instruction to meet the needs of the individual student and the needs of identified subgroups of students; developing pupil understanding and appreciation of culture of countries where Spanish is spoken; evaluating each students progress in meeting the course standards in comprehension speaking reading and writing the world language; evaluating academic and social growth of students preparing report cards and keeping appropriate records to include attendance reports checklists census forms and other recordkeeping activities as necessary; establishing and maintaining standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly productive classroom environment; identifying student needs and cooperating with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students; identifying student needs and collaborating with other professional staff to assess and support students in overcoming challenges related to learning and well-being; communicating with parents and school counselors on student progress; supervising students in assigned out-of-classroom activities during the assigned working day; participating in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities; administering testing in accordance with division testing practices; modeling nondiscriminatory practices in all activities; maintaining professional competence by attending staff development programs curriculum development meetings and other professional activities; participating in various student and parent activities that occur in school including PTA student clubs and after-school activities; and creating an effective learning environment through functional and attractive displays bulletin boards and activity/learning centers.
Position requires (1) Bachelors degree in education or a related field. (2) Must possess or be eligible for permanent or provisional teaching license from the Virginia Board of Education with endorsement to teach Spanish. Eligibility means all licensure requirements have been completed but applicant has not yet formally applied for the license. (3) Successful completion of criminal background check and Central Registry of Child Abuse/Neglect check. (4) Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students staff parents and the public. (5) Work schedule Monday-Friday 7:00 a.m. to 2:05 p.m. during the school year. (6) Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone to enter data into a computer; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms outdoors and on the telephone; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds; and to bend stoop climb stairs and reach overhead.
