Job Description

Post CCT Fellowship in Head and Neck Radiology

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated post CCT colleague to enjoy a Fellowship in head and neck imaging. You will benefit from learning in a supportive environment allowing gradual progression from supervised to independent practice over the course of the fellowship. The subspecialist team consist of 4 Consultant Radiologists.

This fellowship will offer the successful candidate the opportunity to gain comprehensive experience and training in all aspects of Head and Neck radiology. Duties will include: H&N reporting (predominantly CT and MRI) H&N US FNA and core biopsy lists provide support for one stop H&N ultrasounds lists working with the H&N surgical team MDT preparation time and presenting. There will also be opportunities to perform sialography/ sialoplasty and fluoroscopic contrast swallows. The successful candidate will be able to maintain their general/ acute radiology skills with a regular weekly acute CT session. There will also be opportunities for participation in teaching audit and research.

Key responsibilities:

The post is a one year fixed term post based at The Queen Alexandra Hospital within the Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust (PHU) radiology department.  In addition to being part of the radiology team providing a comprehensive Head and Neck (H&N) imaging service the holder of the post will work closely with the wider Head and Neck Multidisciplinary Team.

The appointee will join a team of three H&N radiologists and will offer the successful candidate the opportunity to gain comprehensive experience and training in all aspects of Head and Neck radiology. The team and department will provide a supportive environment to allow gradually progress from supervised to independent practice over the course of the fellowship.

Responsibilities and learning opportunities will include:

  • H&N reporting (predominantly CT and MRI).
  • H&N US FNA and core biopsy lists.
  • Provide support for one stop H&N ultrasounds lists working with the H&N surgical team.
  • Sialography/ sialoplasty and fluoroscopic contrast swallows.
  • MDT preparation time and presenting.
  • The successful candidate will also be able to maintain their general/ acute radiology skills with a regular weekly acute CT session.
  • Potential for participation in teaching audit and research.  
  • Share with colleagues in the training supervision and support of radiology registrars radiographers and ultrasonographers including skill mix training. 

The Queen Alexandra Hospital is a large Head and Neck Cancer centre and the imaging team has excellent relationship with the various Head and Neck teams including: ENT audiovestibular maxillofacial and ophthalmology. PHU is a busy head and neck cancer centre with weekly head and Neck cancer MDT meeting and twice monthly thyroid cancer MDT meetings. The Head & Neck Cancer team comprises of three ENT Surgeons and three Maxillo-Facial Surgeons all of whom are designated Head & Neck Cancer Clinicians. These personnel all dedicate the vast majority of their time to Head & Neck cancer. There are also two Specialist Head & Neck Oncologists within the team and sub specialised pathology services.

The department is well equipped with 6 Canon CT scanners 4 MRI scanners (GE 3T and 1.5T MRI scanners and 2 Siemens 1.5T MRI scanner). There are comprehensively equipped ultrasound nuclear medicine and digital fluoroscopy rooms together with and two dedicated interventional radiology rooms all based at the Queen Alexandra Hospital. We were also recently awarded funding to develop a community diagnostic hub as part of the wider Wessex Diagnostic Imaging Network. The department operates with Sectra PACS and an HSS CRIS and is part of the SWASH consortium. Dragon voice recognition dictation is used throughout the department. 

Portsmouth runs its own radiology training programme with 16 specialist registrars who provide on call services. There are ample teaching and training opportunities for candidates with an interest in teaching.

The Queen Alexandra Hospital started life more than a century ago as a military hospital. Today it is one of the largest most modern hospitals on the south coast with 1200 beds housed in light bright infection resistant en-suite wards. With a turnover of close to 600m we provide comprehensive secondary care and specialist services to a local population of 675000 people across South East Hampshire. We also offer some tertiary services to a wider catchment in excess of two million people. The Trust employs over 7300 staff and is the largest employer in Portsmouth.

Portsmouth is a vibrant seaside port steeped in naval history and surrounded by the beautiful South Downs National Park. It is only 1.5 hours from London close to two international airports and has ferry links to Europe and the Isle of Wight. There are exceptional schools in the region with very good OFSTED reports. Qualifications :

Essential

  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise.
  • FRCR in Radiology from the Royal College of Radiologists.
  • Have ST4/5 level radiology training experience in H&N imaging.
  •  CCT in Clinical radiology
  • General diagnostic radiology skills to support local requirements for acute general radiology service.
